I had,along with other nauseating ills,BPE when I was 40,starting to dribble.

My Doc recommended, during intimate activity a tantric technique called coitus obstructus, google it if you wish.

Essentially it redirects you-know-what back up the urethra into the bladder, thus by degrees enlarging the urethra passing thru the prostate and widening it due to "hydrostatic" pressure.

I well recall Gramps saying"funny thing about growing old,man can't pee and a woman can't stop".

yes he had an interesting section in which he sortof poked fun at himself by having an imagined conversation with a young lady that went on so long with unidentified dialogue i found myself counting back to try to figure out who was saying what.

I am reading a book by Dr. Bob Arnot who is/used to be the medical correspondent for NBC. It is called 'The Prostate Cancer Protection Plan' and is very interesting reading. It is more about what we can do to protect ourselves from PC rather than how to cure it. So it is directed more to those men between zero and 40.

It mostly concerns diet. His wife had breast cancer and concocted an Asian style diet that cut out junk food and red meat. It must work since she is still alive to tell about it.

He has adapted this diet, along with vitamins recommendations, and the results of many medical studies, to come up with one that he says will not only reduce or even reverse PC but, if started early in life, but, will probably keep a person from ever getting the disease.

All this is a bit late for me and PC, but he implies that the diet might help prevents other types of cancer and prevent obesity. The problem is that most Americans have such a literal death grip on junk food that we are not likely to give it up and suddenly switch to tofu regardless of how good it is for us. Hell, we can't even stop smoking and we know how bad that is for us.

My doctor mentioned to me that Saw Palmetto helps some people. I started taking it in 2005 and have not had prostatitis since then. (320mg daily)

I heard there was a recent JAMA study that found no benefit in using Saw Palmetto. All I know is that it works for me.
I sorta like Dr. Andrew Weil, all in all. He's an actual MD who appreciates herbal and alternative therapies when appropriate. Found this at his web site:

Pondering Prostate Problems?

Q: I was disappointed to read that a recent clinical trial found that saw palmetto doesn't work for prostate problems. What do you recommend now?

A (Published 4/28/2006): The trial you refer to was conducted at the University of California at San Francisco and found that saw palmetto showed no benefit when compared to placebo in treating 225 men with moderate-to-severe benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This condition, very common among men over 50, is an enlargement of the prostate, a walnut-sized gland that secretes lubricants into the lining of the urethra and optimizes the environment for sperm. There may be no symptoms, or BPH can cause such urinary problems as increased frequency, urgency and/or decreased force of urination.

In mild to moderate cases of BPH, saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) can relieve symptoms and promote shrinkage of the gland.

The findings of the new study, published in the February 9, 2006, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, are somewhat misleading about the efficacy of this popular herbal remedy, because the men participating had moderate-to-severe BPH symptoms. At least 21 previous controlled trials conducted with men who had mild-to-moderate symptoms have shown clear benefit from taking saw palmetto. In the new study both the men taking saw palmetto and those taking placebo improved over the course of the year-long trial, but there were no significant differences between the groups.

An analysis of the study by the American Botanical Council (ABC) showed that the trial's design was good and the saw palmetto extract used was of high quality. However, the ABC analysis noted that almost twice as many serious adverse effects occurred in the placebo group as in the group taking saw palmetto, an anomaly suggesting that the patients participating may have had other serious illnesses, "possibly interfering in the attempt to treat the moderate-to-severe BPH symptoms." Saw palmetto is known to cause few adverse effects, but it is unusual for those in a placebo group to experience more side effects than participants who are using the therapy.

All told, this study shouldn't discourage men with mild-to-moderate BPH from using saw palmetto. I still recommend taking 160 mg of a standardized extract twice a day; this should help reduce the size of the gland in about four to six weeks. Some formulas combine saw palmetto with Pygeum africanum, another prostate protectant, made from the powdered bark of a tall evergreen tree. Other combinations include pumpkin seed oil, stinging nettle root (urtica dioica), and selenium. I also recommend avoiding prostatic irritants such as alcohol, caffeine, tobacco and spicy foods and eating plenty of whole soy foods, such as tofu, tempeh, soy nuts and green soy beans (edamame).

Andrew Weil, M.D.

There's an old Korean saying -- something about you shouldn't loan money to a man unless he can dig a hole in the ground with his pee.

I think your conclusion might be a little dangerous, but I'm sure lots of things are better than our typical diets.
One thing I've been doing is mixing cottage cheese with cold pressed flaxseed oil several times a day. I just generally feel better and get a better work out. When I started it my sense of well being seemed to change in only 30 min. and I've found it's not one of the things that they poopoo on the “quack expose” type of sites.

Dr.'s Arnot book says that fat is one of the biggest enablers of cancer and esp. prostate cancer. This is why he recommends an Asian style low fat high fiber diet that is heavy on vegetables and fruits.

He said that studies of Orientals showed that as long as they stayed at home and ate their traditional foods they had virtually no PC. Once they moved to the US and ate a US diet that their PVC rate matched those of American males.
