Thanks to all for their concern regarding my operation. Four days after the op I feel as if I could easily go back to work. I have very little pain with either the incision or the catheter. Catheter comes out Tuesday, I expect a bit of leakage for a while and then back to normal. Ain't modern science great?
I had a catheter in me during my stay in Normal, IL., following a head-on I had back in '83...

When they deflate the balloon that's holding the tube in place, THAT'S WHEN you feel the relief. THEN...

when the tube leaves you...because you haven't been "withholding" for a few days, the muscles have "atrophied" a bit due to non-use. Once the tube is out, you'll "leak" for a few moments, but if you "Kegel" (sp?) for a little, you'll have a "handle" on that leakage issue in no time at all.

When you heading out for the next "Iron Man" competition?

If I could do an ironman competition after this operation I would gladly have another because I sure as hell couldn't have done before it.

I was scoped about 12 years ago. The only 'distraction' was the bevvy of young nurses hovered around my butt giving and observing my enema. Fortunately, by that age I had been around enough that I had gotten to the point where I really didn't give a rats ass who looked up mine, esp. if it ment the difference between life and death. Besides, those ladies had seem more old men's butts than I had had hot lunches, and I was pretty sure that if I had met them in the mall they wouldn't have recognized me. But again maybe they might have since many people tell me that I look like an *******.

Whats the best way to avoid or delay prostate problems? I heard tomatoes are healthful. Probably not smoking is a good thing too.

I think genes have a lot to do with the chances of getting cancer but the main thing I have heard has to do with your diet. Mostly they say to stop eating red meat and eat more vegetables, incl. tomatoes.

my doctor who treated me for a "chronically infected prostrate" when i was in my twenties said...."have sex as much as you can (including solo if necessary)".

so i have been following that advice for the last 30 years or so.

it has been working so far.

my prostrate has never been reinfected.

Tom,

There is a considerable difference between a 'chronically infected prostate' and prostate cancer. The former you can treat with antibiotics and the latter must be treated with surgery.

The first thing my urologist did when he saw my elevated psa number was start me on a 30 day course of antibiotics to treat prostatitus, an infected prostate. When the number didn't go down he did a biopsy. That is when he found the cancer.

The tv is full of ads for drugs to treat enlarged prostates. It seems to be an older man's fate to suffer from it. The feeling of having to go all the time and then not being able to go when you get there is a common malady of age. I must admit that a side effect of having my prostate out is that I can now piss like kid. I dribble a bit like an old man but I piss like a kid. It was not a fun way to get my pressure back but it is interesting.

of course a chronic infection is not cancer. i am really sorry if i gave the impression that i thought that.

but a chronic infection if left untreated might lead to cancer. ( i have absolutely no scientific proof of this).

and any excuse for lots of sex is a good one in my mind!

And it is a lot easier to convince your partner that you really don't want sex tonight but, you know, it's the doctor's orders.

That's horrible. First time I'd heard it.

I'm 54, no serious prostate problems yet but a few bouts with enlargement and frequent peeing. It's no fun, you have to go way more often and it takes longer to run out the fluid ounce or two you just can't hold any more.

I kept reading about the benefits of Saw Palmetto berry extract/powder as a natural remedy so after some research, I tried it. Stuff actually works, as God is my witness. Plenty of endorsements for it from many quarters.

Formulas of it are available including a few other ingredients reputed to help, such as the African herb Pygeum, zinc, and sometimes pumpkin seed extract. Pumkin seeds have long been touted as a remedy. Check Costco, Whole Foods, etc. No need to pay top dollar to some TV or direct mail pitchman.

Life is much better for me when I stick to the stuff. Often I make it through the entire night with no getting up to pee whereas at my worst point, it was 3 or 4 times a night.

Thanks for sharing, kip. It's in we men's future in some form, likely as not, all of us.

Works for me too!

I used to get prostatitis frequently. It seemed like I was on Cipro all the time.
My doctor mentioned to me that Saw Palmetto helps some people. I started taking it in 2005 and have not had prostatitis since then. (320mg daily)

I heard there was a recent JAMA study that found no benefit in using Saw Palmetto. All I know is that it works for me.

This is a 'bloodless' computer generated video of the Da Vinci proceedure, for those of us who don't like the real thing.

Tom...My doctor back in the 80' told me the same thing... I had a tough time convincing my g/f of what he said though.....Conversation went something like this :

""What did he say?"
"Oh, just be more active."
"More active? Doing what?"
"You know.... activity"
"What activity?"
"Well...night time activity."
"Doing what?"
"Oh, just doing it more."
"More what"
"More...you know...night time"
"Did he give you a perscription ?"
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because he said, 'I know the pharmasist' ".
"You do?"
"Yes.he said, they'd fill the perscription"
"Who is it then?"
"YOU!"

Maybe, I have read Hemmingway...I seem to remember 'Death in the Afternoon' in his book of short stories...which made a similar conversation between the girl and the youg American investigator.?..IIRC.

Or would you be refering to another one of his?
