Paul S.
The catheter does not hurt at all. It took a few hours to get used to the 'full' bladder feeling but not having to struggle out of bed at zero early thirty made it worth while. I understand it is a bit uncomfortable coming out but I beat up my poor body enough at work that I am accustomed to pain. Besides, I understand that prostate cancer is a bit more of a bother. Peter G. You are very lucky to have the prostate of a 20 year old. That probably explains the 20 year old running around without one. I envy you. My company doctor told me that I have the heart of a 20 year old and the best lung power readings of any man in a plant of 800 men. Yet I still got prostate cancer. Paul T, I am sure that you are in a very good area for excellent prostate doctors. As I understand it, and God knows I don't really know squat about prostate cancer, once you are at your dad's age and having had radiation treatment there isn't much that can be done. This is one of the reasons that I did not want radiation or the seeds. Apparently it does something to the prostate and surrounding area that makes it impossible to correct. Please don't take the above as any sort of gospel. Look on the net for a Dr. in your area that does the di Vinci robot since he/she is probably the most up to date on the latest medical procedures. I didn't look up any discussion groups on the net. I asked about 6 drs. in my area. The problem is that the drs. all have their biasses because they either use the di Vinci or they don't. Those that do think it is great (obviously) and those that don't use it think that the open method is the best simply because that is all they know how to do. Contact a Dr. Fagin in Austin, Tx. He has a very good question and answer pamphlet about the various treatments. He also uses the di Vinci and is therefore a bit biased but the pamphlet seems to pretty well lay out the choices. Good luck to your dad. |

Matt,
The advantage of the di Vinci is that they can spare the nerves that control the erection. At 63 I don't use one with quite the frequency that I did at 23 but it is nice to have one available should the opportunity arise. They did have to do a vasectomy since it is nearly impossible to connect the sperm duct back to the urethra. Still, I have 2 great kids and don't really want any more. |

thanks for sharing, kip.
at age 57 i have been getting the finger every year since 40. my buddies and i joke about choosing our doctors by measuring the diameter of their fingers and choosing one with little fingers. of course prostrate cancer is no joke and so common that most guys will eventually have it probably if we live long enough. mine is swolen some and frequent trips in the night are a problem which i have minimized by strict limits of fluid intake in the evenings....so far. i will keep getting the psa every year for sure! happy holidays tom w tom w

Unfortunately, for most men it's not IF you will have prostate problems but WHEN. At the very least most men get an enlarged prostate eventually.
I'm 52 and so far have been lucky and have not had prostate problems. It's certainly not something I look forward to!

For Paul T and anyone else in a prostate cancer chat room (God, did I ever think I would be talking about this?) the following link might be useful:
http://www.yananow.net/Experiences.html#index Thanks to all for their concern regarding my operation. Four days after the op I feel as if I could easily go back to work. I have very little pain with either the incision or the catheter. Catheter comes out Tuesday, I expect a bit of leakage for a while and then back to normal. Ain't modern science great? |

Tom W,
Congrats on the hip. I saw a video of a hip replacement once. It looked like butchering a beef. Damn they were rough. I sure hope that it has changed by the time I get there. Still, they can do it and that's all that is important. |

oops! too late. my dinner is already settled!
my oldest daughter is a pediatrician. when she was in med school she was assigned a cadaver for disection. his name was ted i think. (her name...the actual name was not known). so one weekend we are over there visiting her and she says "hey dad, you wanna see my cadaver?". i said "no thanks". it was then that i stopped worrying about her being stout enough to be a doctor. tom w

One last comment. I had my catheter out on Tuesday and am about 99% leak proof now. The removal was NOT painful, contrarry to popular belief. I will have to check the psa scores over the next year to see if the cancer has spread. If it hasen't then I am good for the next 30 years.
Thanks for everyone's concern. Guys, over 40?, do yourself and your family a favor and get your psa checked yearly. |
