You have to pay to play with these cars, no question about it. The financial damage can be minimized by taking time (I mean look for a few months and look at as many examples as possible) to find the right car and buy one with a service history- then go ahead a have a PPI performed.

Where did that quote come from? I've seen it on other boards (or is this deja vu).

I don't know who started it, but I think it started on MBworld. I want to get it put on a bumper sticker!

I'm curious on how you determine whether things such as a radiator, the steering column, or various other hidden components will fail within the next 50K miles simply by looking at the vehicle.

Say the vehicle has a perfect service history..........always to the dealer for whatever maintenance or repair is necessary...........I still don't grasp how the future repair issues can be ascertained.........even by a good mechanic who performs a proper and thorough PPI. He can advise what is currently in need of work.........but, can't predict the future.

I see these vehicles as somewhat of a crapshoot. Naturally, if you buy one with a bunch of current issues, that must be added to the cost immediately, however, the future is an unknown quantity with them.

I had a good conversation with my sometimes mechanic down in Raleigh. They service all models of M/B and BMW. He's quite enamored with the 5 series and 7 series. Just need to budget $3K per year in maintenance. If that's a problem........don't buy one.

I think its an offshoot of this, which appeared several years ago.

I can't, I was being facetious. One can predict the future by talking to good BMW mechanics who know what goes wrong within a 100k mile time frame. For my car it's the radiator, upper and lower control arms, center link, pixels going out (though BMW pays for that) and ps hoses leaking. Take car of those items and it should be a good car for another 100k miles. Excluding tires, belts and hoses, I've averaged a few hundred $ /year. It could use new shocks and probably some new spark plugs.

Its kinda like having a beautiful high-maintenance girl friend. You have to determine the value for yourself, and whether its going to be a long term or short term relationship.

again, i think those 3k-5k quotes for average cost to maintain for a year are for people that cannot afford to do their own repairs. For example, if my dad would have taken his 528i into the shop for brake repair, the bill would have been over 1000 dollars. We did it ourselves at home for 350, almost 1/3rd of the price. The trick is to buy a nice classy car that still can be maintained in your garage, i don't feel that way about any of the new body style bimmers or benzes, which is why i will be personally looking for either an e46, e39, or a 98-01 7 series(forget the chassis number).

My brother brought an E55 home for the weekend (he works at the dealer). After running it up to 120 rather effortlessly, I can certainly understand why folks get a grin when they drive 'em.

We opened the hood after a 15 minute drive. You could have had fried eggs on the blower.........even the fenders were hot.

Simply unlimited power...........and I couldn't even get it to squeal a bit in a cloverleaf even when taking it at 50 mph.........it just wouldn't let go.

I don't know about the new models, but my 1971 300SEL 3.5 could handle pretty well, like it was on rails and 0-60 in 9.5 sec isn't too bad, for 1971.

I has a 325ic, and the cowl shake was so bad, the passengers thought my car was going to fall apart.

It's all relative.

How cool is this, the original MK GTI is still being made in South Africa.

I read that VW will be making the Passat diesel in Mexico? I thought they were out. Any current models made south of the border?

I checked and it doesn't seem like they do. However VW Brazil still makes the Combi!

Another excuse to vacation in Brazil.
