Everything I've seen has been "home run".

I was nervous about "burying" T and ELS behind walls, etc. But after some careful research, etc. I ended up burying a bunch of them -- some above nice tongue and groove wood ceiling work -- I'm confident they will be fine.

[quote=Da Nag;1539866]Once concern I've heard of - rodents. Rats supposedly have been known to eat through the stuff, which isn't possible with copper.

Nope. NYC Rats will and can chew through anything up to CIP/Ductaline and A36 Steel.I have seen holes thru concrete foundation walls, PVC, PEX, Copper, Bronze, Lead, up to 8x8 timbers...you name it.

Here in NY PEX is OK for baseboard & fintube/plate heating runs but not for human consumption water. OK for the toilet and such but Copper is code for the humans.

I called an outfit, Plumbing Express, today about having all of the plumbing in my house replaced. Has anybody ever heard of them or know anything about them? They specialize in re-plumbing houses, particularly ones with polybutylene pipe.

Kind of off-topic, but I was playing in my garage yesterday when I remembered this thread. I took two 18" pieces of pex, crimped the bottom ends with a 90* fitting, filled it with water, and crimped a 90* fitting on the top. I threw the whole thing in my deep freezer - I want to see if this stuff really expands up to 3x it's normal size.

Well, I'd be interested to hear the results of that, Thorsen. I do know now there are several brand and types of Pex, so if you post the results of your experiment, please include the details about the spec of the materials you used. Thanks.

I used Merflex PEX 1/2"

After 36 hours in my deep freeze, the water was frozen solid, but the PEX did not expand noticeably. I suspect that if I had 100' of PEX filled completely with water it may be more noticeable.

I don't think so. The water is only going to expand a little bit - enough to pop copper piping but not anything with a little bit of give, like pex. 3x expansion is way more than what water does.

You could always shoot some of that high expansion foam in there and cap both ends real quick

Before you do anything go to your local Loews or the like and get a book on plumbing. There are so many new types of pipe/tubing on the market you can't imagine.

A book called "Building an Affordable House" by Fernando Pages Ruiz recommends HDP(hight density polyethylene) over PEX for water lines and ABS(acrylonitrile-butadine-styrene) for sewer.

Thanks for your input. I'll be doing my homework this week, as I've got to get something done very soon.

Well, it looks like I'll be using CPVC pipe rather than Pex. Many of my neighbors have had Plumbing Express do their repiping with good results, so it looks like I will, too. I'll be glad to get this taken care of.

If you're interested, I found that the water hardness, chlorine content and a number of other factors play a big part in determining the best materials to use. In Fairfax county there is a higher than average chlorine level which has hastened the deterioration of my PB pipe joints. It also will eat through copper faster than it did when the chlorine levels were lower.

Thanks for all of your input and suggestions.

Here's an update. Plumbing Express came to my house on Wednesday morning at eight and they had the whole house completely replumbed by three that afternoon. They seem to have done an excellent job, too. I don't know how big of an area they operate in, but if you need to have this done, I would recommend them. They used CPVC on my house.
