First ticket in 20 years

Guys, fate has finally caught up with me. I got my first ticket in 20 years tonight on the way home from Richmond, VA. I was caught on Route 301 in Maryland. I was written 9 miles over (64 in 55 zone). But I was actually going 78. The officer said since I have a clean record, he reduced it to 64. He had instant on, so my V-1 could not have saved me. Plus there was only one other car on the road and it was dark. I could not have seen him at all.

Will there be points on my record?

I think I am going to court and see what the judge has to say. The fine is set at $80 but I am not going to pay it until court date. What do you guys think? Or should I just pay it?

Is it worth to hire a lawyer to fight this?

What should I do?

Sometimes, if you can fabricate a half a reason, the judge will waive the points and take the money... they always want the money.

In NY you ask if you can plead to a lesser charge such as failing to obey a traffic control device. They get your money and you get no points. I once got a ticket in "Shamrock Co. " Texas and when I arrived in NY I called the court there and asked If I could plead to a lesser charge. Worked out .

In Jersey, if you haven't received a ticket in 3 years, you can pay like 4x the fine to the court and they'll wave the points. Might cost you $400+ bucks, but worth it in other ways. Basically extortion, but that's par for NJ.

Tell them you were drunk and trying to get to a bar quickly before the buzz wore off, the judge should understand that.

If they have traffic school in your state, take that. It is like criminal "diversion" and if you complete it, nothing will go on your record at all.

You will have to pay an administrative fee to the Court I think, and the traffic school "tuition" (which is around $35-$50 I think).

Some states have them you can take on line that are allowed. It is not a bad experience at all.

Example:

http://www.trafficschoolonline.com/

Once you complete the traffic school, you send your certificate in to the DMV or the Court, then the charges on the ticket are dismissed. It's wise to check your DMV record a few months later to make sure it is still clean.
(You kept a copy of the traffic school certificate just in case).

Most states don't allow the use of this "gift" more than once every 12-18 months though

When I was about 17 years old, and got my first (and hopefully only, knock on wood) ticket, that's what I did. It was an absurd ticket, and was for a stupid reason (making a right turn on a yellow light, with a cop up my arse. If I hit the brakes, he hits me. If I go, the light turns red with me in the middle of the intersection. Either way, it was a loss). At any rate, I went to court, they plea bargained it down to a "No-points careless driving", at the tune of roughly $280 - 300 bucks.

Yep, about par for New Jersey, "The Tax & Corruption" state. If I didn't work here, I'd move in a heartbeat.

First of all, I am not trying to beat the system. I just want to see if there is a way to get rid of that point. As I said, I don't mind paying the fine. I broke the law and that's that.

I think everybody is entitled to make one mistake, to be precisely, one in 20 years. Just because I drive a sport car that does not mean I am a habitual speeder.

I could have told him I work in the Law Enforcements, Fire and EMS industry but I did not. My Infiniti did not have the license frame that says my "Work Number is 911". It is on the other car. The policeman was a young Hispanic and was rather rude when first approaching my car. He banged my window with his flash light which I did not appreciate. Then he attempted to lure me into an argument, which I just sat there with both hands on the steering and answered every question followed with a "sir" or "office". He was extremely condescending at first, until he found out I have no speeding ticket before, and that I am alot older than he thought. He toned down and was very polite after that. It is because I work with Law Enforcement folks everyday and understand how stressful it is to standing out in the dark highway. I tried to make him feel as comfortable as I could. I even smile a couple of times. When he asked me to sign the ticket, I told him kindly my eye sight is not as good as his, and asked him if he minded shining his flash light on the ticket for me. I did not want to reach in the car to turn on the interior light in case he thought I was reaching for whatever and raise his stress level.

I did an online traffic school thing. It took all of 45 minutes as opposed to the in person one that takes god knows how many hours.

Well, first off you were guilty so man up and take it like a man. Unless your a girl then nevermind.
It's really not the worst thing in the world.....seriously.

I don't think you understand what a favor that officer did for you. Speeding fines for 15+ over the limit are astronomical. And in my opinion if the officer appears in court you don't stand much of a chance.

Just pay the ticket, take traffic school on-line and get on with your life. And STOP SPEEDING!!

Or you can try this:

I think he is, taking it like a man. He's not whining. He's not a habitual ticket collector.

couldn't hurt to wait til your court date.if the cop doesn't show up the judge will have to dismiss the charge.if the cop does show, just plead guilty and go on with life.
