Oddly enough in my corner of Vermont there are the remnants of a once fairly numerous Russian community and many of their farmhouses were constructed with the traditional Russian Ovens,Massive,thick central masonry devices containing multiple flue chambers going every which way,horizontally,vertically,sometimes for many feet to extract the maximum amount of heat before it's lost up the chimney top.
Many are still in active use. The majority of the masons who costructed them kept the details a closely guarded secret.
