Well, if most times you get bit by a guy wearing a blue hat, how easy it is to say "The next time will be different."? Sure, once or twice and you might forget about it. But if they did have more bad experiences than good, it is a hard sell to tell them that the next one might be better.

[QUOTE=Hatterasguy;1727010]The Germans probably would have won in Russia if:
They captured the British army at Dunkirk. They invaded North Africa and seized the suez canal right after there victory in France. This could have been done with 4-5 divisions since the British only had two at the time, one questonable. It would have been over in a matter of weeks. Supported the movement in Iraq to overthrow British rule and establish a very, very pro Nazi government. German paratroopers and 2-3 divisions at most could have done this. This would have set up a very favorable situation for Operation barbarossa: 1. Britian would have been out of the war, or its participation irrelevant. They would have lacked any meaningful army and would be cut off from there colonies, which as a result would have fallen very quickly to Japan. 2. 38 divisions stationed in France would have been availible for Barbarossa, as well as 12 in Norway. Since the Brits are out these forces can be used elsewhere. Also several divisions (about 7, I beleive the 3rd panzer to name one was there, very powerfull forces tied down) were messing around in Italy and the Balkins, again this would not have been needed. 3. Oil supplies would have been secure, as well as access to the Ukraine. Those 50 divisions could have formed a 4th group which could have thrust up towards the Ukraine and cut Russia's balls off in a matter of weeks. They would have lost oil, and wheat fields, as well as retreat routes for factories and there armies. Not to mention the only air bases they had able to hit the German oil refineries in Romania. With all this conditions meet Operation Barbarossa could have been launched in April/May 1942 with 191 divisions, insted of 141. Note* this extra time would have allowed the Panzer divisions to replace most of there outdated Panzer 1,2, and 3's with 4's. All of the above was suggested to Hitler several times by officers in the OKH, but he refused to listen. Hitler had a strickly continental view of affairs, he really didn't grasp the whole picture. If he grasped the whole picture he probably could have gotten Japan to invade Russia as well, since he handled the British for them. This would have tied down all the divisions Russia used to beat the Germans back. Its scary how good the German officer core was, I believe at the time they had no equal. Germany could never have won WW2. Hell, they couldn't even beat England. Der Furher was afraid of the water. With the US manufacturing capabilities in the mix he was doomed. And how would you ever conquer Russia? Hell the russians can't even rule it. One of my favorite facts about ww2 is that the air war was won in large part because the allies built planes that protected the pilot. It was an unconscious decision based on our value of the individual human life. The Japanese and Germans built fighters that were quicker and faster but less safe for the pilots. So in air battles our planes could take a huge pounding and still get the pilot home. After a while the Allies had a huge core of experienced battle hardened fighter jocks and the axis had a bunch of inexperienced kids. We won the air war in large part because of our value of the individual human life. Love it. The Germans were doomed from the start. The Japanese and Germans both banked on the US staying out of it. Again, look at my post. You are talking about attrition which everyone agreed after WW1 was something Germany could not win. The new tactics they developed that used armour to quickly end the war in France and Poland were devloped to prevent such a war.
I was not talking about operation sea lion which was a farce to begin with. Much groundwork had to be done before a sea invasion of Britian could take place, and Hitler was just not willing to commit. The steps I outlined in my post would have largely laid the groundwork. You are correct in that everyone knew including the OKH that they could not win a sustained war. As Albert Spear said, if its not over by October of 1942 we lost. The army officer core seemed to feel this way as well, the spring 42 offensive was there last real shot. Some generals felt that the failure to advance on Moscow in the fall of 41, and then the failure to pull back to sensable defensive positions was the beginning of the end. In October of 1941 they were 180 miles outside of Moscow with little in there way, however Hitler ordered an advance west to encircle the last major Russian army on the front, which was just outside of Keiv.(sp?). This is responsible for there failure to capture Moscow and advance to defensible positions on the Volga(sp?) river by the winter of 41. However if they had made a few slightly different moves, there chances of ending the war in 1942 were very good.
