Blu-Ray, what does it mean for me?
http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/blu-ray.htm
I have read enough to now be confused. Easy to do. There's nothing explaining the future for this technology as far as consumer products are concerned. Wal-Mart has said it is going to drop all HD-DVD stock soon and only stock Blu-Ray. Toshiba is abandoning HD and also iHD or, as it is now called HDi ( What was that anyway ?) I know there are those of you up to speed on this and perhaps you would let me and others know what we need to do to not buy equipment that is going to be redundant soon. So, does this affect anything about the 2009 date of 'off the air' HD TV? What else do we/should we know? Feel free to correct anything I have said that may be wrong. .

It's a format for DVDs. You can buy a Bluray DVD player if you want, but as far as I know they aren't going to stop making regular DVDs if you only have a regular DVD player.
Doesn't affect TV.

HD-DVD and off air tv reception are completely different.
Hd-DVD and Blu-Ray are compared to VHS and Betamax VHS won that round Sony(Blu-Ray) won this round. If you don't own a HD-DVD player or stock in toshiba... this is no concern to you. |

For now just buy an HDMI upconverting DVD player with 1080p output. It will fill your HD screen with an enjoyable picture from standard DVDs. You want this for your old DVDs anyway.
If you rent a lot of DVDs and have a good source for blue-ray rental disks I might change my mind. |

We just bought an LCD tv and got a free Blu-Ray player. It is supposedly called this because the laser is blue. It will also upconvert a plain DVD. Blu-ray is the way to go.

*** "They're coming to take it away..HA! HA! They're coming to take it away..." ***
If you still have the ticket from the purchase of the HD-DVD unit, turn it back in...
HD-DVD is going the way of the Betamax...wheel chocks for your Benz. I heard a "news report" yesterday that suggested that "...if you have an HD-DVD player, give it to your grandparents, so that they can play their "John Wayne" discs on it..." Damn you kids! I represent that remark!!! The "BR" (BlueRay) is the industry's adopted standard, and you're going to hear more and more about the other companies that will be making the switch over to it...and the sooner the better. By this time next year...the next "Pandora's box" problem will be people wondering if all the TVs, that are analog, will be poisoning the earth's water supplies and the ozone layer will be peeled off the top and bottom of the poles by every Bubba using the old set's glass screen as a target for his 12-guage shotgun... See ya'all in ozone hell!

Sucks for you. Take it back and hope they accept returns on opened electronics.

Buying any disc format player is risky in these days of "on demand" distribution.

Unfortunately, many On Demand services are passing off 720p and 1080i as "high definition". Its more like medium definition by todays standards. |

Studies have shown that the cheap HDMI cables work just as well, Digital is Digital, so if people want to spend the extra money on Monster Cable, they are more than free too
