Dlp

I bought a 43" Samsung DLP (1080) 4 years ago. The HDTV on it is outstanding. I would rather have this over an LCD anyday. Perhaps the only place it lacks is the picture quality on regular tv, but I guess I choose to stretch it rather than watch it in its 4:3 formatting.

I has been great. Have to replace some bearing for the motor that runs the projector, but that has been the only problem. Picture has not faded and looks the same as the day I bought it!

Ah that was just plain cruel.....I thought A-Rod was adios muchacho? I heard a rumor the Red Sox were picking him up. Jaba will outshine him.

You know I'm just joshin'......it's just that time of the year again. I'm also cranky because the Phils biggest offseason move blew out his knee (Brad Lidge) on the first freaking pitch in batting practice. Awesome.

It's a shame that you don't know someone who can get them wholesale.
You're on your own with the Bose though. Shame to put that with a nice TV.

o.k. now if you were paying attention, I said I'd have to confer with you before I made my final decision. What was the name of the other speakers you liked?

No, I quit paying attention to their earnings after I got rid of my CC stock.

Many TV's have a color balance setting somewhere in the menu that will make whites look more or less blue or yellow. It might be disguised as a "picture mode" with choices like "cinema" and "natural".

Folks with really high end HT systems have their calibrated by an ISF certified tech. For my home setup, I used the Avia calibration DVD and a Sears Craftsman sound field meter to balance the audio. Most boring couple of hours of tweaking and switching ever.

This is 2008 almost 2009. Have we not progressed beyond dip switches and 'settings'? I just want to turn it on, hit a button and voila ... Actually having to exert any kind of effort is so ....so ...... 80's

Well, since this IS 2008/9, people are so tech sophisticated and particular that the manufacturers have to put these controls on equiment to satisfy the public demand for perfection...

For a better comparision, you might want to view the products you're interested in a higher end store in your area, one where the staff loves tweaking stuff or where the manufacturer sales reps stop by on a regular basis. It's more likely that the products are set up properly.

I used to work at such a store and it was always great when the reps would come in, fully tweak their video and audio stuff just to make the other brands on display look and sound bad. When there were sales, the reps made the place "A/V Battleground"

Our local Time Warner unit swapped out our SA3800HD DVR with the latest one they carry . . it has a nice feature that automatically upconverts the signal to the panel to the best the panel can display, which for us is 1080i, and the result on SD broadcasts is pretty nice.

I would go with the samsung as well. I have a sharp, and took it over to a friend's house put it next to his samsung of the same size. The colors are much better on the samsung.
For audio, you migth want to look at Harmon Kardon.
If you have a dark room in the house that's pretty good, you might want to get a projector. It's so much cooler to have your own theater. 1080P projectors could be had for about $2000 or so.
I have noticed that the 1080P tvs seem to have somewhat better color than the 720P.
Good luck.
BTW, someone higher up in retail said that a lot of the AV equipment will be a lot less expensive just after the new year due to the 'depression'.
Oh, we expect photos of you showing us the new installation when it is done. Yes, we want you in the photo.
