^Goes back to the beginning of this great country. Every recent immigrant population started the same way (African Americans are a special case for obvious reasons, but recent Africans follow the same pattern). I agree, give them a few generations.

Illegal immigrants are criminals by definition. Good people they may be -- though I'm sure, given human nature, that a lot of them were criminals back home, too; that was why their home countries didn't want them. But good people or not, they *are* committing a crime, that of violating our borders.

What taxes do these illegals pay? I thought part of the problem with having so many people swarming across our borders was that they didn't pay taxes. I bet a lot of them get paid in cash, so no deductions. And they can't file income tax forms. Yet they get all the benefits of being a citizen here, including medical treatment, free schooling, etc. -- and can even vote. True insanity. You think Mexico would allow you sneak in, complain bitterly that public signs are not in English, send your kids to their schools, and vote for El Presidente? Ha.

If they love Mexico (or Honduras or whatever) so much that they want to establish it here, why don't they stay home and fix what's broken in Mexico or Honduras? They can't fix their home country's problems, huh? Well, that's not my worry.

So sorry, Charlie. Try us again when you go through the *legal* procedures to become a visitor/citizen. And even then we have the legal right to restrict who gets in and why -- including a very good reason: America is already overpopulated.

I read BenzAdmiral's posting. His arguments were reasoned and never stooped down to slurs or name calling.

In California illegal aliens cosume $9B more in government resources than they put back into the system. That does not even begin to take into account the detrimental effects on our legal system when you have people who commit crimes, from petty larceny to murder and everything else in-between, who will never be held accountable because they skip out and return to their native countries.

Whether one wants to face it or not, illegal immigration into the US is a serious problem that calls for intelligent solutions. Neither opening the border and saying" Bienvenido Amigos or nor putting up a wall and shooting everyone in sight will solve the problem.

Finding those solutions is one of the biggest challenge of our generation. If we do not find those solutions, and finding them quick, the USA that we will leave to our children will be a lesser country than the one our parents gave us.

The estimate is based on a 1994 study by the Urban Institute that concluded there were 307,000 illegal immigrant children enrolled in the state's public schools.

My time away was educational ( I re-read Steinbeck's East of Eden--Carl, if you are reading this, you ought to read this book, you will like it very much--plus two other books exposing Fidel Castro's regime) productive (helped Mrs. Benz-LGB paint around the house) fun (got to spend more time with my last remaining child at home) and interesting (I continue to explore the highways and byways of Second Life).

But my keyboard fingers were just itching to get back into the fray!!!!
