I'm not at all a "pack rat" but the garage is the exception...

...I even saved the wheels from an old plastic garbage can long tossed away!!! In case some kid will someday come looking for wheels to build his soap box derby racer???

But the VW in my sig, rotting away outside...it's a wonder the HOA hasn't gotten on me about that yet!

I really am trying to not keep stuff around like that anymore. All my unfinished projects are functional, and am currently using, but will finish them all when I feel like it.

Right now my oldest project is my old Rectilinear III speakers that I have had for about 10 years. They don't really need anything, but i've been wanting to put a coat of tung oil on them since I got them 10 years ago..

I might need a part from it to fix something else that's broken.

I need to sand and tung oil a rock maple mirror frame that has to be at least 125 years old. 15 years ago I stripped and oiled the other parts of the bedroom suite (twin beds, bedside table, high and low dressers) but never got around to doing to the mirror...

Although I have a bunch of stuff in the garage, none of it needs fixing. (some of it though, needs to be tossed out)
The oldest thing, besides myself, that needs fixing, is the 280SE.

I'll get back to you on your original questions.
I couldn't stop laughing when I read this. The skinny version lol. Hawaiian women might not have shoes but they probably have 200 pairs of slippahs in the closet

I'll admit that I am the winner here.

1) A vintage audio mixing console sitting in the shop waiting for the "correct" potentiometer.

2) W116 120K miles SD with the front end dismantled for new bushings...

3) A 1966 Chevy C60 2 ton truck undergoing complete restoration.

4) Two Porsche 914s. One is a GT project with fender flares, 300 HP V8 . The other is a stock resto. Both have been untouched in three months.

5) Several ham radio projects. One big box in the attic labeled "projects gone bad". I do work on these at least once a week.

6) I'm in the process of digging a basement for the house I plan on building at the ranch.

7) Constantly fixing the backhoe tractor used to dig the basement hole.

8) About to start a conversion on the 12 ton equipment hauler trailer from pintle hitch to a gooseneck.

9) Building a wireless FM transmitter for a good freind so he can listen to his computer music in his back yard on a portable FM jambox.

10) Having soil samples tested to grow grass for the cows at the ranch.

Damn... I could go on but, I have too many things to do.

Oh yea... and then there's that new baby. Kinda makes all the other stuff seem trivial.

why do I keep stuff around? It might become useful. The keyboard I am using now is from the iMac I wanted to make into a fish tank. I am using the keyboard because I bought a new desk and the laptop sits higher than before and also because the shift keys on the laptop do not work anymore. I like having a semi normal keyboard.

My oldest thing that needs work... the 300D... and lots of it still

Even if we don't get around to fixing it, someone will buy it if we list it on eBay.

1929 Victor radio/phonograph/wire recorder. Fixing this is not the real reason for keeping it. Some day I will research a legal theory concerning it.

Advertisements at the time told buyers that they could use this combination to record from broadcasts or 78s on to wire, then record back from wire to blank 78s to and give the newly created records to friends.

The theory: Victor was owned by RCA at the time, RCA is now part of RIAA. The owner of the equipment has express permission from RCA and therefore RIAA to duplicate and distribute copyrighted music owned by RCA or other RIAA members.

Legal P2P music sharing!

Mea Culpa

1. Why do you keep broken stuff lying around in a garage or your home in the hopes that "one day you'll fix it" when you know you won't?

It is in my genetic code... probably goes back to that ancestor who kept all those mastadon bones in his cave....

2. What's the oldest thing you have in your possession that you hope to "One Day Fix?"

Currently it is a Zenith floor standing radio from my Grandfather. It was built in 1935 and needs to have the speaker paper replaced (18 inch speaker) and new cloth put over the speaker grill Last time I had it running it still pulled in shortwave from Argentina!
There is an old Seth Thomas clock circa 1900 that needs help, a couple other radios from the 1930's and 1940's one is a Grundig and one is an RCA.

One project I will never complete is installing vintage intercoms (circa 1920) in the house. I never did get the wiring right but they look cool hanging in the hallways

Hey I just thought of one that I DID finish... I rewired an old wooden country wall phone, you know the one with the crank on the side, to work with a modern telephone company. I even put in a dialing module inside where the batteries used to go. Yes, a DIAL not buttons

Best thing is that the crank still rings the bells!

So there, I did finish something!

Ha ha ha! That's pretty funy. John, your garage makes even MINE look neat and tidy! On the other hand, any time I ever asked you, "Do you have a _____?" you were able to walk in there and grab whatever it was.

Besides, if worse came to worse, you could probably entertain yourself for weeks with the stuff out there!

You can get the old speaker reconed for a lot less than a replacement! Some places will even rebuild the speaker so it looks new. Check out this link to an antique radio forum topic on reconing.
