Good luck in the career move Tom. Nothing wrong with a steady paycheck. Does it come with football tickets for home games?

Make sure the check clears before the Ferrari goes on the truck. But you know that.

The seashore resort economy here is a little shakey. Crowds this weekend will speak volumes.
Glad things are going well for you Tom.

Rewarding work and good pay is the best quarter of the grid.

(Have you gotten tickets to the home games yet?)

Amazingly the fellow in England wired me all of the money for the Ferrari before I let it go. Sight unseen. He didn't even send an inspector.

I did help load it on the truck though (the brakes did not work).

After spending the last year using up stimulus money PU is reducing the flock in Project Managment and construction. Myself and a couple of other old goats are being put to pasture. October 14 will be my last day.

The last year has been very stressful so in that way it will be a relief.

I am exploring other employment opportunities but am planning to go back to Architectural practice probably mainly as a consultant. There is nothing that compares to being self employed. The trick is to survive in a recession/depression if you are in my area of endeavour.

My son has been managing my building for the last three years and moved to Florida two months ago so I will need to spend some time doing that.

And I think I will get my real estate license and try that out.

I am excited to pursue the new course.

Tom, with your skill set I doubt you'll find it hard to keep employed. Should you find yourself with too much idle time on your hands you could always volunteer.

Here's a cause you might find worthy.

Tom,
I would add that in addition to your skill set, you have the desire to work. That sets you apart from many. You should be able to do whatever you choose.
Several times I thought about self-employment, but was always too fearful to try. My self-employed friends seem to have difficulty actually getting paid. Some unscrupulous Contractors love to hire self-employed consultants with the thought that they would never actually pay the bill, and wait to get sued.
You seem to have successfully done it in the past, so that door is wide open for you.

Good luck.

Getting paid is always a concern.

Over the years I suspect my non payment would be less than two percent of monies billed.

If my landlord first rule is to let a place set empty rather than rent to a bad tenant, my first rule as an Architect is its better to not be doing work than to do work you won't be paid for.

Separating the two is the tricky part.

In the last two days I have gotten two calls about new Architectural work, both from known previous clients. That is encouraging.

The other night we went to the mall and ate at one of the eateries there. There was hardly an empty parking spot. Looked like thanksgiving day after.

That makes me think the economy is taking off.

Thanks so much for the words of encouragment!

Maybe you could get one last benefit from PU, asking them to send you to Denver for a little professional development right before you leave:

Looks fun.

In three years at PU the only place I got sent for professional development was to INdianapolis, so Denver seems like a no go.

Just remember Tom, at your age, Frank Lloyd Wright was just warming up!

Is my memory correct in thinking that he was warming up in more ways than one?

Well at my age more or less his career was in the toilet during the depression (sound familiar?). A few years later he got the commission for Fallingwater and his career took off for a chapter two (or three or so).

He also was on his third wife about this time. This one was a lot younger than him and was sort of a crack pot into Mysticism or something a little wacky.

I actually met her when I was a kid. My class took a field trip to Taliesen West and she lead us around expounding on his philosophy and all sorts of metaphysical claptrap. We, a bunch of preteens, were all like...what??

Well I guess it beats just brace yourself honey as foreplay..

Tom I really do not know totally how it all works out for some people but it seems to somehow. I never envisioned being in the income position I am at age sixty nine. Yet looking back things always seemed to work out for us somehow.

I do not know if it is good management or good circumstance or whatever. All I recognise is some seem to have it and others not. Perhaps it is because I have never been afraid to tackle anything in my case. Also I am all too well aware we all as individuals project differently.

Usually I am basically an optimist as well. This last period in time since you started this interesting thread has not reduced my unusual caution. I cannot determine if a portion of it is age related or just my antenna is still detecting things I do not like.

I still almost feel like there is a shell game of enourmous magnatude going on. As I percieve it nobody seems to really wants to deal with the serious issues that many percieve and continue to confront us as a society.

It is a well known fact that economic growth is a constant requirement to sustain our system. Since we really no longer have it currently and it does not look that good in the short term future. The resultant fallout should continue unfortunatly.
