The new job at Purdue is fun.

I'm pretty excited, my first job that i mostly initiated is approved for construction and we are just finishing up the paperwork.

The Bell Tower repair has turned into a delayed gratification, we are hiring a consultant to investigate why we are getting excessive water inside it and how.....

The pole barn boat storage job is nearing the construction stage...

We are hiring a consultant on the heavy timber roof structure historic building job too.....

The construction of access platform in the boiler plant that are suspended on the fourth and fifth levels of the boiler plant on beams and columns is in pricing and the Engineering drawings are being elaborated.

The access ramp on the front of one of our larger historic buildings is in the second design refinement stage.

My 3.4million budget mechanical and electrical upgrade for the computer rooms at the Calumet campus is in bid now too.

The preliminary design on the 28mil new building at the Calumet campus is through schematic design and the 34mil new building at the North Central Campus is now just beginning programming in preparation for schematic design.

Thats just hitting the high points. I have about 25 or so projects I am managing at present, though about ten are basically finished just waiting to be closed out at the end of the warranty period, but I suppose that is normal. About 2/3 are inherited underway and the rest I am getting up and running.

Its very busy but challenging and overall fun.

Its a little unnerving to know that you always have about fifty people looking over your shoulder at all times. Its embarrassing if you get caught making a mistake but reassuring to know that if you miss something someone else is sure to find it.

Its always better to be very busy than the other way around!

Man, it sounds like you have a lot on your plate.

I have fond memories of heavy timber 19th century roof construction. When I was a teenager I lived on a college campus with a huge building constructed in the first half of the nineteenth century. My friends and I built a secret fort up in the attic amongst the huge beams. We'd hang out up there for hours.
We found an a traveling 'museum' hidden in another building's attic which included John Brown's spear.

I've always found that having fifty people looking over your shoulder just allows you to get fifty fresh perspectives. My employees always have a different perspective than I do, so I often ask their opinion before I make my decisions. Glad to hear all is going well - congrats.

Tom,

I'm happy to see things are going great guns for you, at Purdue.

Michigan vs. Purdue, at W. Lafayette tomorrow. Take it easy on Michigan, this year. Our team is young, and the boys have not turned into "The Mighty Men of Michigan," yet. Wolverine Fans, are BAD Losers, but they're getting used to it for this year.

With all these projects that you have control over at Purdue, I think it will increase your private practice, tremendously, as time evolves. Best Wishes!

YIA...Paul

Its quite a change from private practice in my own little firm but I am getting used to it.

I see PU beat michigan today. Sorry Paul. Its surprising that anybody has more troubles than the boilers who have lost their first two qbacks recently to injury. Last week we had in a qback who was converted from rb who played qback in high school.

I am not looking for any work in my practice but have done a few small jobs as much as anything to give my former employee the chance to do some work, since he has not found a job yet.

Well so much for this football season...

I should have said that when you retire from the job at Purdue, you will have a lot of experience, in different types of architecture. Hope your former employee, finds work soon, Good Luck to him.

Tom, have you had any ideas that you want to tell us about new designs, that will be required in our homes, for using the new technologies, that will be offered to us when we start to live in the new energy world, that will be coming to us all, in the near future? The question is what will it be and how can we utilise it, in daily terms, whatever that will be? Electric cars, CNG, LPG, and whatever else...

Its hopeless for me. Been at the same job for nearly 10 years, never missed a days work, never called in, never late, give it my all and making a lousy $8.50 an hour and they call me a department manager. I am full time and after taxes (state, local, federal, etc, 401K I put in 8% total, which I have lost out big time on, insurance, KARE plan, etc) it does not leave much for the wallet come payday. The humanity!

Thankfully all of my cars are paid for and I have a nice "wing" at my folks home (which thankfully is paid for). If not for that, I would be on welfare and food stamps - which I refuse to ever do. NO good paying jobs here.

Still have bills like gas, food, auto insurance (for 4 cars) and I do pay some utilities at home (water, etc).

I always wanted to be a meteorologist, (I love weather and science) but you have to have perfect math skills to be able to get your met degree, which I lack. I hate mathematics, so I guess I will muddle through with something else eventually. About ready to call it quits, because I am not sure how much longer I can stand working there for nothing.

All of the good jobs here are going overseas... so many local factories going out of business... I see it more and more daily.

I am thankful for what I have though. I have nice cars, (old but nice enough for me), they are paid for, a nice house thats paid for, etc, but still long for more, as I am sure many do.

I would like to have more money for more pleasures of life... like trips, better car maintainence, etc. I have ranted enough.

Well, I think houses will get smaller, have appliances and lights that use a lot less energy and utilize the sun for direct gain heat and electrical generation. did I mention better insulation and more effecient windows?

Well it sounds as if you have a lot of good things going for you at present. And you sound like an ideal employee. Don't give up. Keep looking for an opportunity. You don't say your age but more education might be the thing to work toward.

Best of luck.

How old are you? Go to a state school and get your degree, it sounds like you have a lot of your ducks in order. Just need an edge.

In other news

We are negotiating with a windmill company out of Wisconsin to rent them my old office space in my building. We are pretty excited about it. We are hoping to ink the deal on Tuesday and move them in in early December.

They want my display window next to the main entrance too to display a model of their windmill.

Don't forget to tell them you might need to rent it out in 4 years for Obama's re-election.....or maybe to Hillary.
