I love lenovos. They are the only computer I will buy.... They are super dependable, and have great service.

Go to www.pcmagazine.com and look at their reviews. Might also try www.pcworld.com. Choose what you like. Then go to www.tigerdirect.com and see what they have to offer. Suggest you spend about $80 and purchase a 150-250 gig external hard drive and keep the laptop constantly backed up. Don't ask me how I know.

If you like Dell, go to their website and look for refurbs. They are very good and reasonably priced.

Backup, backup, backup!

I think I have learned my lesson!.. Thankfully nothing that important was lost. My article for the delorean magazine was already sent in with the pics.. phew!

I am really leaning towards a macbook. I want something different and now windows based.

To each his own... Yes, they are different, and yes they look cool, but about 75% of my college apps wont run on OS X.

Tables are pretty cool for taking notes too.

tables.. as in the desk?

I don't have any college aps that need windows... yet. But at least the new macs can run both systems if need be. One kid at my conference was running Solidworks on a mac pro, of course it was in XP. Dual boots rock. He reported no issues at all.

As tyl604 notes, get a good external drive and backup. Mac or PC Backup.

Consider backups like maintenance on the Mercedes, you don't skip oil changes.

You can get a 500 gig mybook for 100 bucks +/- and Acronis for 40.

Make an image of the BASE machine before you start adding all the junk, make an image after you have it loaded up. Then backup daily, weekly, just BACK IT UP.

And with a 500 gig external you'll have plenty of space for archiving that old junk.

I'm looking at the Inspiron 1525 mainly because of the wider variety of color options and the lower price.

I'm still going scratch and dent on it. There are some with Vista Ultimate but not in the color scheme I like. I think tomorrow I'll head on down to best buy and see if they have a machine with Premium and Ultimate and play with them. I will make sure they have close to the same specs as the laptops I am looking at.

but nothing I need for class will run on it. Sure I could go boot camp or the other dual boot options... but I'd rather not. I figured what my needs were and frankly, a dell will do the same things I'd do on a mac.

With less quality, less style and less performance.
