1/10th of New Mexico is an enormous amount of land. And we'd need to build a huge electrical grid.

Even finding that much land to devote to it nationwide won't be easy.

Nonetheless, algae does look good.

Nah, no electrical grid. Solar would be the way to go for these installations.

An on-site solar station isn't hard to do. Connecting to the existing power grid is the hard part for solar.

Energy requirements would be pretty small and if neccessary they could probably burn the algae cake to create power.

CO2 supply would be the hardest part.

The solar collection fields would double as the drying field and I should imagine they could use water storage tanks as the on-site presses to extract the oil. Low tech solutions to a low tech process.

Windmills? And spoil those beautiful mountain views? Cad.

Solar? I just shelled out a small fortune for my beautiful dream house. NFW am I going to bastardize my roof with those tacky solar panels. Let my neighbor use them.

Wait! I've got it! Let's import our energy from far-away places!
Well, turns out damns are likely to one day make wild salmon functionally extinct, along with AGW anyway.

Some research out that damns are not nearly as carbon friendly as one would think. Turns out they belch up quite a bit of methane and CO2 from decomposing, submerged plant life.

And there's plenty of spaces for windmills where no one complains about the view being impaired.

Didn't you say the less money they have to screw around with the better? Now you seem more concerned about them having a deficit and taking the money from somewhere else or borrowing it and you're essentially saying we should give the govt more money so this doesn't happen. I'm not saying that's an unreasonable line of thought, it's just unlike what you've argued for in the past.
For the Road, income, etc, etc Tax, it would be cutting from what they are getting. Yes, they will steal it from somewhere else but at least I have something back. They are going to steal from somewhere else so I might as well keep as much as I can.

Here is what I see the problem of them getting involved in this project. It is now another project for them to mismanage. Something they have proven to excel at. In this case, you are adding one more area they can steal from and mismanage. In theory, it would be great. However, sooner or later, this project will need a "boost" and so they will raise a tax, add a tax, etc, etc. Now, this project becomes another slush fund. Do I want to give them that excuse? I think not.

You like clean air? You also like what Ethanol is doing? Govt doing what it does best. Tobacco addiction is a problem? They will fix it. Like their solution? IMO, at best, they will cripple algae projects with unnecessary bureaucracy. In the medical world, we have HIPPA. Are we better off with AT&T being broken up? Wanna talk about the military and how they make the soldiers buy weapons they don't want simply because it gives their constituents jobs? What about what they pay for a crapper seat? At worse, algae will become a white elephant and craps all over the place, At worst, it will die out and cost us bunches.

Look, the govt can't even handle what it has, or do you disagree? If they can even get it within budget without any accounting tricks that Arther Anderson would use, I'll admit they have achieved something. You don't think that they use Cash Accounting because they were confused, do you? You don't even use that for your checkbook. Here is my prediction. With Govt involvement, it will cost more, achieve less and be a bigger PITA to get.

Why? You are making "oil". Send it somewhere else. You'd need an electrical grid but I don't think it will be as large as that.

The further out it is, the more power loss.

Our country is what it is today because of the investment our government made in our national infrastructure. Well guess what, we have outgrown that investment and our economic prosperity and security is threatened with high energy prices.

TVA, BPA brought cheap energy and jobs to help build the rest of the infrastructure. We once had a highway system that was the envy of the world. Now we should stop at some bridges and jump up and down on them to see if they are going to collapse. We no longer invest in our infrastructure and created jobs we hand out checks.

Three or four decades of ignoring our needs is now going to bite us in the behind.

Say, that is about the same amount of time since the introduction of the professional politician and our allowing the government to be controlled by special interests and their pet projects.

At least my pet project will return an investment to the rest of the country.

That word is in the PAST tense. As they say "What have you done for me LATELY?"

Not "will". "might". Depends on how things go. Someone else can still beat us to the punch. The govt could get involved and still screw it up.

A remarkable fellah named Stan Oshinsky has developed a related idea …. to use algae production to clean exhaust gasses from power plants. The exhaust is re-routed from the smoke stack and past through liquid (water) containing algae. The algae removes most of the nitrogen oxides and the carbon dioxide.

The end product is a renewable energy source that can be used to produce fuel as noted above or as a source for hydrogen, plus it cleans the air and uses exhaust heat as a power source, and as a result the cost is minimal.

See the section The sun gets its energy

Put the idea of this thread together with the idea presented by Mr. Oshinsky and we can see a revolution in its infancy.

And given the govt's current record of late(30yrs) they would screw it up.

On the other hand, the govt hasn't been able to screw up the oil industry, has it? In fact it's doing remarkably well, with record profits (compared to its own past profits).
