WW2 Bomber question
I've been reading a 1940 Pop Mechanics. In this issue they have a 2 page photo spread on " The World's Biggest Bomber".
From the pictues, I cannot identify it, but the specs they give make me think it is a work of pure propaganda--- "carry an 18 ton load of bombs, from the Pacific to the Atlantic coast and return, non-stop. The wing is 212 feet from tip to tip, main landing wheels are 100 inches in diameter." Gross weight 164,000 pounds, 7500 mile cruising range, 210 mph top speed, fuel capacity of 11,000 gallons, 4, 2000HP engines. one and one-quarter million hours of shop time were required to build the ship. to me, the 212 foot wingspan seems very large for a 1940's aircraft. Can anyone identify this bomber?

A little smaller than a B36, the B36 span was larger and carried more like 30 to 40 ton load.
Here is a Link to the B36 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convair_B-36#Specifications_.28B-36J-III.29 Hmmm, I don't think the B32 Dominator was that big, also seems too small for the B29. Gilly

Must have been alot of misinformation back then. I found this on youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmhevFScTXg at about 2 1/2 minutes into this thing the announcer says it can carry, get this, 28 TONS of bombs. Looking at the specs on wiki there is only what, around 20,000 lbs btw empty and full weight, if I'm not mistakes empty weight includes no fuel, so not sure what to believe, but since the wingspan and the 1940 times relate to each other I'd say this is the one. Kinda looks like the B29 or 36's prototype.

That must be it--Douglas XB19
Looks like the low top speed condemned it before it was completed. I saw an article where Douglas wanted to scrap it before they completed it as was already obsolete, but the Army pushed them to complete it. Thanks.

That's because at the time the real specs were all top secret. If you can get an old copy of Jane's All The World's Aircraft from the time period you will see what I'm talking about. Stuff like that isn't released until well past the aircraft's service life.
