Thumbs up Look what I just got from the UPS truck

13 - 7.5" x 43" sheets of Zebrano veneer.

I bought it so I could make some console cup holders for my w123's. There is obviously WAY more than I need for two cup holders.

Once I finish mine, I'll post some pics of them and see if anyone else wants one. I'll be building a template since I have to make two already so making more will be easy enough that I'll be able to build them at a great price for forum members.

Give me some time to build these two and get some pics.

LOL. I think that's the fastest I've seen any thread go this direction.

Including shipping, I paid $36.59

That's why I bought 13 sheets. It would have been a good deal for a portion of that.

I'm thinking I'll be able to build w123 cup holders for others at $25 plus shipping.

I'll still have to build the actual cup holder, glue this veneer on, then stain and clearcoat to match the rest of the wood in a w123.

I bought it from a guy named Ronnie on eBay.

Sorry, I don't think I'll be able to squeeze these in by then.

I was thinking about getting a Venturi kit with a small bag for these, but I'd end up spending about $300.

I can do it by sandwiching it between two pieces of wood and using enough clamps. The top will be completely flat, so the clamps will work fine and I already have a bunch of them.

I'll have to start looking around for parts to build one myself. It shouldn't be hard to make one for far less than a ready made kit.

Cool. It will be made to just sit in the console, so you'll be able to easily take it in either of your w123's.

I'm planning to make it similar to other designs I've seen with room for two cups. But I want to add a space for a cell/iPod/sunglasses or whatever else you'd want to put in there.

I was looking at the trim in my car and thinking about how hard it would be to make some new trim in a completely different wood. A lot of the pieces are not flat, though. You'd need a vacuum press to do a whole set like that, I guess. I've just done small, flat stuff like jewellery boxes and humidors so far.

All the trim seems to have the same round shape. You could probably cut a clamp block by running a piece of wood by a table saw blade at an angle to get the right negative shape. The ashtray handle would need a vac. press though.

EDIT: I wasn't thinking about the 90˚ bend pieces at the ends. A vac press would be the best bet.

I just googled it. Wow ... very time consuming stuff there. He apparently did textile designs too. Talented artist/craftsman.

If you're into furniture, check out John Makepeace. He doesn't do veneered furniture, but he has some great, organic-looking pieces. I stmbled across a book about him a while back. I love his stuff.
