On my 1985 2.3-16, the mono wiper has two wiper blades.

I like the two blade system on my W126.

Did you notice that on the W126, W115, etc they set it up so the passenger side wiper doesn't dump a bunch of water in front of the driver?

Thats pretty funny. It reminds me of the Mazda GLC, where the engine slowed down when ever we pushed in the cigarette lighter.

I always assumed the mono-wiper system was a form of cost cutting. MB builds all these chassis in both right and left hand drive versions. A dual wiper setup would require different systems for RHD vs. LHD. Think about it - a dual wiper system always favors clearing the drivers side of the car. In contrast, the mono-wiper is identical for both RHD and LHD cars - just change which side it parks on.

As for why it went away? I think too many compliants that it couldn't keep up with heavy rainfall. On this point I have to agree, though it's rarely much of an issue where I live.

According to MB research, the single wiper cleaned up 94% of the windscreen compared to conventional dual wipers which only do 74% so it was indeed a good idea and one that worked. Maybe the complexity of the epicyclic system made them take it off.

I'll have to agree with you. The single wiper when it is at full speed has a tendence to float across the windshield and not be very effective. I've had older Mercedes with dual wiper blades, a newer one with monoblade, and brand new with dual blades and I can tell you without a doubt that the two blade system is much better at clearing the rain than the monoblade.
