I bought my 90 Volvo 740 wagon (a NON-turbo 4 cyl) about 3 months ago on ebay for $601. The plan was to strip and scrap it...until I drove it. Yes, it's got issues like intermittent radio, a passenger window that doesn't work, a missing catalytic converter and no front speakers...but I've put about 2500 miles on it since I picked it up and it's got over 313k miles now...on a NON-turbo 4! I feel quite safe in the car, and was worried about taking it 180 miles from home to go on Reserve duty...but it made it there and back all the while pulling about 22mpg.

I wished I could afford a 240DL or 240GL when I was in college. I'm pretty happy with it right now

Yes, but if the Subaru isn't as reliable...you won't see her as much.

My 1986 240 wagon had 342,000 when I sold about 8 years ago, and I occasionally see it drive past my shop.

Maybe I will look into MB diesel ownership again as well, since fuel costs have gone down, and there isn't as much of a demand for them. I came across this 240D on CL, it looks very nice, only problem is it might be a while before I can get back to Seattle to look at it: http://seattle.craigslist.org/est/cto/969045581.html

This 300SD looks ok as well, and it has a reference to mercedesshop.com: http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/cto/967687090.html

I forgot to mention, I might have talked my brother into an older Volvo, although he just found a cheap beater Subaru Wagon he might buy in the morning, after he inspects the minor body damage.

BTW, I am slightly intoxicated again...

No wait, I want that CAR! I'll up my $600 investment by $400 for half the mileage, turbo and alloy wheels!

I know, I know, I need to focus.

I just want it to warm up and the snow to melt so I can clean up the Corolla and sell it. Maybe early January it will do so, that is what has happened the last few years.

I might go and look at it next weekend, if I can make it over the passes to Seattle.

look for rust

kick panels and the rear hatch door area.

anything with the redblock engines will do you good. Grab a 242 if you can find it - I should have bought the one I looked at, and regret not...

Word, I'm hell bent on an MB wagon but I like my Volvo more every time I drive it, unfortunately its hard to find examples like yours in the rust belt..if its older than 10 years old its usually toast the salt, potholes, ice ruts take their tole on cars. The front end on my car was perfect in November but since winter struck I'm noticing a few bangs and clanks, I already replaced a complete strut assembly.

Since your mom is stationed at Ft.Lewis, next time you are out this way, I am sure you can pick one up, and cheap. I am seeing a bunch of them on CL that are down closer to Tacoma...

Those Volvo 240s are good cars.... I would stick with a 1984-1993 model though. My uncle has had about 4 of these (sedans and wagons)- some with well over 200K - and have to be good cars to take the abuse he gives them. They ride a little stiff for my tastes, but they can be tuned with certain shocks to give them a smooth ride. The engines and transmissions seem to be bulletproof. I cannot believe how smooth the transmissions shifted on these cars, even the one with 247K miles.

There was a crash here not too long ago where a young girl was in a severe crash. She was in a late 80s Volvo wagon. From the looks of the car you would think someone would have perished in it, but she only had minor scrapes. Amazing. The crumple zones majorly crumpled, but the passenger cage was completely intact.

My uncle had a 1981 Volvo 240 sedan that had some fuel injection issues, but his 1986-1988 models were OK. The best one I think was a 1986 wagon. It had well over 250K miles and had been driven from eastern North Carolina to eastern Colorado on several occasions without and problems except the hubcaps on those models were prone to break. The car was originally gray, but for some reason he had it painted white. Its life ended when he went around a curve on a rural 2-lane and hit a tree that had fallen across the road. Appearance wise the car was fine, but it demolished the front suspension, so he junked the car.

I have never owned a Volvo, but I almost bought a 1985 Volvo 740 a few years ago. It had an inline 6-cylinder diesel engine that was a Volkswagon engine. At first, I thought it was something someone added in it (so I did not buy it), but later found out it was a factory option and regret not buying it, because I heard they were good engines.

I have never seen rust on these cars around here, but I have seen some 70s and 80s 240s on ebay from up north that were rusted pretty bad (especially on the undercarriage), so buy one from the southern or western USA or inspect closely for rusting if you have to buy a northern example. Remember that the airbag was added in 1990 on the driverside, making these cars even safer.

Good luck!
