Thanks. Might need to have that done to my new X700 I just picked up.

The lower end cannon's are junk, as are the Kodaks.

In my opinion one of the most durable and excellent cameras out there are the Panasonic Lumix series. They're built in Japan, and super well made. There's a whole slew of different models too.

Olympus also seems to make good stuff.

Low end Nikon cameras are also pretty bad.

I was looking at a low end Nikon, but they have bad reviews, and don't have solid feel that the Panasonic's seem to have. Plus Panasonic makes the Leica's

Is that a misqoute? Panasonics have Leica zoom optics, and Leica uses Panasonic sensors, but I hadn't heard that Panasonic builds cameras for the folks in Wetzlar. Is Panasonic building the C-Lux, etc cameras?

I thought that Panasonic doesn't build anything, but instead is a badge for some unknown brand. I remember reading about it in a supply chain class many years ago.

Sony DSC series

It was inexpensive and hooks up easily to my computer for downloading. It takes a 1 GB memory card and the batteries last for 200 minutes even using flash on every pic.

The draw back is shutter speed. I need to use a flash to get clear pics or it needs to be on a tripod. I'd like to make sure my next digital camera has a faster shutter or an adjustable setting for it. I'd like to be able to take better pics of my glass art in low light settings without having to set up a mini studio every time. I also like to have the ability to use a wide angle lens.

Prices have really come down since I bought my camera. You can really get a lot for your money these days.
Every Sony Cybershot or W series I have owned had same damn problem. The LCD went flooey due to a problem with the ribbon cable...always AFTER the warranty.

Bought a Canon PowerShot A540 used for $100 as a job site camera, slapped in a 4GB SD card and its lasted 1 1/2 years of being dropped, dampness, left on the dash in 100+ deg weather. I can't seem to kill it.

Real camera is a Nikon D80 with 6 lenses (10.5mm, 20mm, 18-55 zoom, 80-200 F2.8 zoom, 180mm 2.8, 70-300 with anti shake, etc)...

Leica has always farmed out the electronics

Before Panasonic, Minolta made all Leica R series electronics. Glass by the Germans and Brain by the Japanese.

Leica R-3, 4, 5 were Minolta XD-700 series brains
Leica CLE Rangfinder was Milolta CL as well (they let Minolta rebrand Wetzlar glass as Minolta).
All the Leica M series after the M4 had Minolta metering system, with Leica mechanicals (assembled in Sigapore and Portugal of all things).

Come to think about it Nikon hasn't assembled a camera in Japan for 8 years, Thailand, Malasia and noe Vietnam since the labor cost is mere sheckles on the yen.

I have to chuckle everytime I see average folks lugging around their DSLRs and lens cases at airports to take "holidy snaps."

Mashusta (sp) Electrics is parent (but now called Panasonic) used the name National in Japan and Far East.
Panasonic is the GM of Asia. Tecnics, Akai, National, were all panasonic products.

I do remember the CL being a joint effort, but I seem to recall that there was a difference between the Lietz lenses (40 and 90) and the Minolta versions. Perhaps the Minolta had some plastic elements? It's been awhile since I last thought about it.
