This thread is a perfect reason as to why I didn't buy in an area with an HOA. You'll have to get a set of the rules and see what is deemed major work. Since the DeLorean can legally be driven without any of the stainless panels (except the doors) they won't be able to say much.

Just to piss them off I'd park my car at the end of the driveway, hood up and facing the street whenever I'm home. I'd tell them that you're changing the oil and you like to do it with a cold engine or some BS.

I don't consider taking one part off of a car at a time to be major work. Once it's visible that you're parting it out though you'll have problems...hence the reason why I'll be putting up my fence VERY soon.

Code Enforcement told me that I can have anything in my back yard as long as it's not visible (behind a fence) and is at least 5' off the property line. That new concrete pad is 6' off the property line.

I only have the right front off and the right rear fender. I have the right rear off because I'm "waiting" for the new one to arrive and the right front is being sent to dmch for "repairs"

these people need to ask before shooting

It's an erosion control barrier. A "fiber log" made of straw with string to bind it together.

Sounds like he is obsessed with wheels, so if he follows advice like this, his future home will probably have them too!

Angry I despise out of control HOA's

I totally despise the HOA's. I got banned from the Lodge's computer room *and* the HOA lawyers threatened Photobucket, who then closed my entire account because of ONE single mention of the Association's name and a picture of a employee's picture I posted, then they passed ex post facto laws aimed specifically at me, and banning me for this, and then one of their security people out of uniform in an unmarked pickup truck chased my wagon home late one night and screamed and threatened me for driving too fast, and chased me into my garage, and a couple of days later a police radar trailer was parked outside my house for 2 days, at their behest.

I am going to file a couple of nice fat lawsuits over all this because cumulatively it's harrassment, after 6 months of back and forth letters trying to get redress, I was told by this guy, a drop out from law school, "I am tired of dealing with you" and I too, have had enough of these people acting like Nazis and VERY highly paid ones.

So probably I will go after the guy's job personally, because my homeowners dues actually pay part of this fool's salary, which, according to the marketing director of the place, who I had a date with last year, is over $250,000 per year.

It's a small town, so the newspaper will get involved, and people like this HATE publicity, the other dues paying homeowners, most of who are retired, are NOT going to like the fact their money is paying for this behavior and that it could happen to them too.

I have identified the guy's bosses and will notify them they have a loose cannon on board, PLUS I have identified the appropriate state regulatory agency, that would be involved here, and intend to bring them in to investigate.

The declared war on me, personally, so war is what they will get.

When it's over, like Robert Vaughn told Mc Queen in "Bullitt", I hope to "personaly officiate at his public crucifixion."

I lived in a gated HOA for a number of years and I thought it was great. I read the covenants and talked to the manager and some potential neighbors BEFORE I bought in. There was a significant monthly membership fee but the elected mgmt board was really on utility and road maintenance so I was generally pleased with it. I'm a plant guy and so, felt that the rules regarding landscaping were overly conservative, even boring. But I'm sure I was in the minority because all of the yards looked essentially the same. Except mine and a few others that skirted the bounds of common decency. I wasn't resentful. Just not entirely pleased is all.

I sold at a nice profit before a local real estate collapse, which I believed was an act of brilliance on my part. Then Katrina happened and you could sell swampland at Florida real estate prices and then I felt like I sold too soon! I understand that the HOA became quite lax with the sudden influx of New Orleans refugees and flush of money. People tell me the place is getting seedy. Maybe I was brilliant to sell back then.

Jim, I see you're in California...but do you have any laws that would have protected you if you pulled a firearm against your intruder since he chased you into your own garage? I'm not sure if that would have made the situation worse or not though. It would definitely wake up a few people so that they realize you're not playing their games.

I mentioned this to a girl I had been dating who lives in San Jose California, and she told me, her father had "ALWAYS" instructed her to shoot the perp dead in the DRIVEWAY, and then drag the dead body inside your HOUSE, and then "castle" doctrine applies, so you would be absolutely safe, legally speaking in California.

Just to be crystal clear, though, it needs to be said I didn't come here to live with the idea of turning my driveway into the "OK corral"........

The so-called Homeowner's Association here are really a bunch of cowboys, though SO FAR they are not armed with lethal weapons.

Note to self: never buy a house in a HOA neighborhood. And to think we complain about the Hysterical...err...Historic District Commission.

I can thank this forum for alerting me to HOA's, I never would have thought twice about it before. They do seem to be relatively scarce around here. I suppose it's because new developments are fairly rare.

Sure you can.

Scumbag real estate developer greedheads do it all the time, all that's needed is to bribe local councilmen, and enough members of the planning commissions or donate money to their political campaigns as necessary.
