Whether it has a valid registration or not, its a junk car that you are dismantling... not something appropriate to do in a densely populated residential neighborhood. Repairs and maintenance is one thing, junking a car out for all the neighborhood to see is another. You must have great parents. Mine would have never let that happen while I was living there.
While I agree I would never do that in a nice area, and when I junked and parted a Mercedes a few years ago I kept it at my dads friends shop. Still HOA rub me the wrong way.

If you got a notice from an HOA and aren't the title holder to the house or the cars, you should have thrown it away

Since buying my home (edit) 1 year ago, I have had two run ins with the HOA.

The first instance was with my yard. Being a newly built home, all I had was dirt and weeds. Someone in the HOA thought I was letting things go, and made a complaint. They left a nastygram on my door to clean things up. A month later, I had a lawn greener than most in the neighborhood. I was waiting for the lowest bidder before I had irrigation and sod installed. No biggie...

The second was a small battle with my third driveway leading behind my fence. I wanted to put some of my cars behind the fence to be considerate of the neighbors. I got cleared through the developers, and had it done. Someone complained about that, too. One of the neighbors wanted to do the same thing for a boat, and was denied through the HOA. Since I cleared it with the developers, leaving the HOA out of loop, they sent a letter telling me my third drive was in violation and would have to be removed. Luckily, the developer is a friend of the family, and we compromised by extending my fence out a bit, and making the gates wood instead of iron, so most of the drive can't be seen.

The evolution:

First move in:

Before yard, third drive installed with iron fence:

The final product:

My name was on the letter, but my names not on the title of the house. It is on the cars though.

I am pretty sure that the person who was complaining was the old man that lived at the top of my street. Ever since he died, I have received no more letters...
