Seems like the formula should incorporate similar thinking to how they arrive at the Corporate fuel ratings--total miles divied by total gallons.

I think 35MPG is doable for many vehicles. Anyone who has been paying attention realizes that 35 is not a huge step. Look at the numbers - http://www.bts.gov/publications/national_transportation_statistics/html/table_04_23.html The MPG ratings have been fairly static in some classes, while posting modest gains in others.

US car manufactures have cried wolf too many times. Seat bealts.... it drive the cost up of cars. Air bags... it drive the cost up of cars. ABS, it...... OH shut the hell up already.
If my 13 yr old Diesel can get 32mpg then there is no problem getting a 4500 lb vehicle over 35mpr in 2016.

Jeremy Clarkson tested a high end Jag with a twin turbo V6 diesel a while back, and even driving wastefully and with all car options on and such....he still got well over 40mpg.....
If the Jetta TDI wagon can get over 40mpg.....then 35.5 should be an easy target. And I bet both of those vehicles weigh a lot more than 2,750....

I don't see the big deal either. My 2004 Jetta weighs 3000 lbs and easily gets 45 mpg. And the older ones get even better mileage because they have less power. Anyone who insists cars can't get 35 mpg 7 years from now must be smoking something. Heck, even the auto industry is going along with it this time, so what's the problem?

New lighter, more fuel efficient cars AND population control at the same time!
Eliminate safety glass, crush zones, bumpers, air bags, seat belts, ABS, ESC,4 wheel brakes. Souinds like a smart cars without all the refinements. The Peel it is

You seem to have the opinion that getting decent fuel mileage will result in very small cheap cars. Detroit got you right where they want you.
