Of course heavy vehicles are safer . . . for those in that vehicle.

OK, lets come out with an expanded Hummer, maybe 10,000 lbs. Major armor, etc. Oh man, we'd be safe if everyone drove one of those. Of course we'd go broke faster than we are now.

Bingo. We have a winner.

How did I know this line would come out. Why not expand it to everyone driving a semi? I drive as heavy a vehicle as I can afford. Why? I can make money back a lot easier than I can rebuild my body. Or does your body rebuild like a car where you can insert a new part in a few hours?

I don't think I'd bet any money on that statement.

A big truck will win over any car.

I remember years ago, maybe 40 years ago, the argument that larger cars were safer. Someone crashed a Caddy into a VW to prove the point. Someone else ran over a Caddy with a Peterbuilt.

Wow. You got that right !!

Unless there’s some bizarre story to this one…
I’m thinking, that’s not the intersection that car got smacked at.

I’m also thinking that if the driver lived through (and maintained consciousness following) the initial impact. They were quite happy (and praying) to stay right where they were until the train stopped.

We just had a truck vs. old GM century/cutlass accident around here recently.... the woman died (she caused it)....truck driver was uninjured. They had to cut the GM open to get her out of the car. Here's a couple pics of it. Scary part is, my wife used to drive one of those exact cars....I told her it was a death trap. She's safely in a W124 now!

I’m not 100% on this, but didn’t the crew from Top Gear stage a head-on with something like a big Volvo and some small econo-car, with some interesting results?

Sorry. Facts are facts. Petro is finite. We in the USA are burning through the stuff like there's no tomorrow.

Another approach is to continue the trend to take semis off the highway and put them on railcars.

I've never bought into that notion that much myself, the one about heavy vehicles being the best. Some heavy vehicles tend to roll over easier than smaller vehicles, don't stop as fast, don't corner as well.

It's hard to argue that a car weighing 6 K isn't going to do better than a 3 K car in a head on collision. But there are so many factors involved that it's not usually so clear cut.

Which has what to do with the issue? I am safer in a bigger box. I can make the money back much easier than rebuilding my body. Gas might be ending tomorrow or next year or next century but that has nothing to do with the issue.

What is the equation for Force? I thought it was Mass X Acceleration?

Bingo. Now, we actually have a real winner.

Best line of the thread so far.

To think that one can judge the overall safety of a car from its mass...
Or from a photo...
Or from the results of a single accident you happen to know about...
Or who built it, for that matter...

is nuts.
