What about the simple idea of keeping a safe distance in front of you, especially as conditions worsen?
I can't tell you how many cars I see at everything over 15 MPH with 1 car length distance to the guy in front of him, all the time, in all conditions. People are nuts. Physics 101.

In my mind, I consider myself first and foremost. I learned the extremely valuable lesson when I was young that if I regard #2 and #1, he/she may not give me the same courtesy. So yes, it is about me when I think. Me first. After all, can I count on others putting me first? I think not.

I think the prerequisite course for Physics 101 is Common Sense 101, is it not? I also think a lot of people fail that course and change majors all together. Many of them then go for the elective study courses like Cell Phone 101 and Make-up Application 101. - Shelby

What kills me -- lately I don't hestitate to pull over, change lanes, whatever, to get some tailgater off'n of my butt. Weird thing is, a good half the time, once they get past me and they're breaking the wind, so to speak, they end up going slower than when I was in front of them. And this is in cases where I wasn't speeding, so it's not like they were shadowing me so I'd get the radar/laser hit and they'd be speeding risk-free.
We really aren't that far removed from lemmings.

And let’s not forget: They’re in a great big hurry because their life is oh so more important than mine. And if they can’t get to WalMart before the rest of the world, theirs just comes tumbling down. ![]() I love how these people who tailgate and dice through traffic, 99% of the time end up being right next to (or just a few cars ahead of) me at the lights. All that wasted gas and wear-n-tear for absolutely nothing. You’d think they’d figure it out. Which brings us back to Common Sense 101. - Shelby

Another one that kills me, or kills them rather, is the way motorcyclists like to buzz between two cars next to each other in adjacent lanes, traffic is moving at 55 mph + and these guys whizz past my door, a foot or two away, doing 65 to 70 I'm guessing. Not sure about the rest of the nation but around here, cyclists are allowed to driving on the bots dots, centerline, whatever, to pass if traffic is all but stopped. Argument is that air cooled bikes need some movement or they'll stall from overheating, providing one more bit of blockage to slow traffic. But speed racers get a rush, apparently, from doing 70 to 80 even in heavy traffic. It has to be tough for an officer in a car trying to apprehend such people as only a bike could catch them. I saw a guy dead on the Bay Bridge a few minutes after he'd passed me doing that in traffic going about 30 mph. A few people were around him, a bit numb that they were looking at a dead man. I've read of others dying under similar circumstances.

People tailgate so bad around here I just ignore them now. I can adjust my rear view mirror up in my truck so I have a nice Honda Civic sized blind spot behind me that they just disapear into.
![]() I think people are just dumb and think your supposed to be 1 car length away.

Three Stage(S) of Impact
1.Vehicle Impact with Foreign [Or Domestic]Object(s).
2.Occupants Bodily impact with some portion of Transporting Vehicle(s). 3.Internal Organs of Vehicle Occupants Impact with Own Abruptly Stabilized Outer Body covering.(I.E. Your Brain with your Skull) [or the inverse your brain with your skull as it's crushed by the windshield] Reduction of the Deceleration rates between 1,2 and 2,3 are the Attainable Goals for passenger safety. Have you seen the Videos of the Smart run into a solid block wall @ 70MPH ? The passenger cabin remains intact... BUT no Human body could have survived the Instantaneous/Abrupt Deceleration. I would go much further than Hattie in my indictments of Motor Vehicle Operators in these United States. Fully 1/2 would be Driver's License-Less Tomorrow Morning if I had My way! Traveling from point A to point B has degenerated into a blood sport.
