Love the Scout 80/800's!

My first car (and I still have it) is a 1971 Triumph TR6. Soon after I bought an Austin America which I rolled on RT32 just north of New Hope, PA.

Mine looked like this but it was a 1977 with a V6 and a 4 speed.

A&S '70. My senior year Rosemonster honey was from up your way. Newington, iirc. Sweet memories.
(Daughter wasn't interested in the ML setting. Went down to cozy UDEL for less than half the $$. Good value there, for my money.)

1959 Peugeot 403

Bought it in september 64 for $150. It did not make it to Christmas.

Nonetheless, I think that I am the third old bird to report this model as a first car. For as obscure a car as a 403, to have 3 of them on this list is a pretty counter-intuitive indicator of later interest in 80s MB diesels.

Yeah, filling the gas tank was a hoot. I had a guy back into the fender and crease the fill tube. It'd only accept gas at a small trickle and of course the only time I needed gas was in the rain!

Yup, the old "fill up the oil and check the gas" machine. Stinking, warped, sheet metal valve covers. It would probably be still on the road if we'd had silicone gasket goo back then. All we had was good old Permatex #1 and #2. Oh yeah, and that weld your parts together, "Indianhead Shellac".

Fun car to drive but what a miserable POS to own. Learned to drive in the winter time peering through a 1" wide slot which is all the, ahem, "defroster" would clear.

We went through quite a Corvair stage. I musta owned 5 or 6 of them. They could be had for $50 all day. We bought them just for the engines. It was easier to replace an engine than to rebuild them. My partner and I had the engine swaps down to a science. We could completely swap engines in under an hour.

I used to have to drive with the top down in the rain or snow whenever the windshield would fog up! I had replaced the hosed for the so called heater, but a good frost and you were stuck. I remember driving standing up to see over the windshield one night!

I loved that car regardless and would get another in a heartbeat. Actually I would want a '64 Spyder or '65 Corsa convertibles of course

The engines were great. I remember dropping mine a few times to fix oil leaks (new pushrod tube seals did that) redo the spark plug wires and do the exhaust...

I think I will disagree with you on that.
True Pugs are/were "obscure.
But they were always ( in those days) well built. In fact one mag from the early 70 ( Road Test, I think) prefaced their article on the 504 diesel with this, " If Mercedes wanted to market a lower-priced car, they should simply sell the 504"--or words to that effect.
I considered that a "thinking man's car". You did not buy a Peugeot for the ohhs and ahhs you'd get because of its social status. But fully independent suspension and 4 wheel disc brakes, rack and pinion steering, wonderfully compliant suspension were all great attributes to anyone who could look beyond the nameplate.
Much the same demographic for your 80s MB diesel owner. Someone who appreciates the solid engineering, and doesn't mind being a little out of the main-stream of car buying. After all, the easy thing to do is buy a Japanese car--but for some of us the MB Diesel is preferred.

As I noted above my first car was a 64 Falcon V8--again a car somewhat out of the mainstream--at least for teen agers. Everybody was getting the new Mustang. Falcons were slow with tiny 6 cyl engines. Well, I appreciated having a useful backseat ( for transporting friends) and a V8 Falcon was certainly not slow.

My baby. I miss her deeply.

I drove a 1994 Honda Accord EX. It was my 16th birthday present from my mother since she bought a saab

I had so many fond memories of that car. My parents were always predicting its death, but I kept on driving it past the 250,000 mark.

Then my brother crashed it...

Now I drive a benz with a 100,000 more miles then my old baby.

Too many memories in that car. My friends missed it more then I do.

Here's a picture. I still see a handful around Ithaca NY and occasionally in Erie.

It even has my dorky turquoise coloring! Ugh I miss it so much.

My first car is still my car, my 1982 300SD.....bought it over 6 years ago when I was 17....on ebay. It had 207k at the time....now at 281,584....its still going strong (with a new trans as of 5 days ago )....I'm going to keep it as long as the rust does not destroy it or some idiot hits it. Last November I added my second MB to my fleet, the 1990 300E....its primarily the wife's car....I got it mainly because I did not want to have to pick pieces of her out of the Toyota Rav4 if she got in an accident. She agreed (finally) and let me put her in a MB. (Which she loves, by the way...she adores the comfort of the seats) Once I get some more cash I am determined to add a 240D manual to the stable as my 3rd/spare car. Then I will have a complete collection of W123/W124/W126. If anything ever happens to my SD I will very likely replace it with another SD....I think they are simply the best car ever made. The ride, the feel, the engine....nothing beats it. Not even the 300E....its just not the same.

I'm going for a job possibility soon that may have me driving 30k+ a year.....the SD will get a REAL workout if that goes through....but it also means I can be even more maintenance-anal.

Cool! A&S '09 and then whenever grad is done. The ML is unbelievably expensive...place I lived was old and falling apart and STILL almost unattainable with my pay. It was across from a wawa though so that scored major points...
