"Wireless network connection" problem
I have XP
Previously I never used Wifi, but I could always see all the neighbors when I clicked on View Available Wireless Networks. Today I installed a new Verizon DSl modem/router. Now when I go to View Available Wireless Networks, for the first time ever it says this: "Windows cannot configure the wireless connection If you have enabled another program to manage this wireless connection, use that software. If you want windows to configure this wireless connection, start the Wireless Configuration Zero (WCZ) service. See article 871122 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base." So I looked there and did what it said but it didn't help. What is going on?

What you have to do is go to IP settings and change it. The Windows is set up by default to be the MAIN provider. When you running the new card Mr Gates automatically overwrite the protocol. That is why I don't like Windows
Go IP setting and just change them to automatic or if you know what is IP address on the Verizon router just change your PC to it. To do that you need to hard wire the router to the PC first, open the browser and type the address, this will give you control over the router and you can do a lot of things. Good luck

I am not at your pay grade. Please, again simpler...
This will allow me to see all the available networks again? How did I end up with this problem today?

I am not sure you are understanding the problem. The router works fine. My friend can link to it (with the WEP password), no problem. The issue is with my computer. It has decided not to use wifi anymore, with the error message displayed. Are we talking about the same thing?

I found the answer on the Dell support site. The error message means that (for some reason) the Dell Wireless Utility has taken over control of the wireless connections. To access it you go to "start", "control panel", "other control panel options", "Wireless Configuration Utility"
That's all!!

LOL!
The simple fact is that you have a third-party application that facilitates your wireless access... namely, your "Dell Wireless Utility". So you need to use that to configure your wireless settings, not Windows. The rest is simple. My wife and I have work laptops that use Funk Software's Odyssey wireless utility. I had to configure both laptops to recognize my Verizon home setup using the Odyssey configuration setup.

You're probably better off removing the Dell utility. The one that comes with Windows works fine.

The weird thing is the Windows one was always "in the drivers seat" until yesterday. I don't know what caused the Dell utility to "take over."
