On Larry King. If that's the case I hope the parents get the (legal) a$$-whoopin' they said the kid would have gotten if it was a children's prank.

Brian is right...everyone involved are morons.
Nope. Not unless it was a heck of a lot taller than that thing is/was anyway.

I give them points for their interest in science and aviation. Beyond that though...

Brian – As for the helicopter downwash idea to get the thing down goes.
For starters. Though it does sound like a good idea... that’s about it. We aren’t talking nice soft laminar flow beyond 10’ or so below the blades. By the time you had enough “wind” to blow the thing down, you’d probably tear it to shreds. (Does work good on ducks over a pond though !)
Second. Have fun trying to find a pilot willing to try it with a kids life at stake.
A marksman shooting from the helicopter putting holes in it may have been the way to go. (Check the ground before you fire of course. )

If you put the helicopter about 150-200' above the craft, it'll generate a bit of a downwind on it. If it's floating at a level altitude, you don't need much to send it southbound.

You'd try it...........

I have the feeling that I may need something bigger than the 530F.

I just figured since it was cruising at 30-40 mph there was some windage involved, not unlike an inflatable hang-glider.

But I ain't so smart.

There ya go. That could shove the kid to terra-ferma.

Especially, with one of those loads that has the cyclic up in your armpit at HOGE and a 5deg. main rotor pitch bump over certified static.

aka: If the engine so much as burps - you're dead.

Starts to look it was all a hoax; I already got suspicious when I read they were part of a reality show in the past.

The police chief or a spokesperson officer, not sure, was just on the tube for quite a while saying that they're fairly certain it wasn't a hoax. Who knows. Those guys like face time on Nat. TV also and it's a much nicer story if it's all heroics and innocence.
