Didn't that happen to Rudolf Diesel?

Tell me if this sounds odd:

The last time I got under way, it was on a U.S. Army ferry barge across the Euphrates river. I was part of a convoy of U.S. Navy tractor trailers hauling gravel to a construction site on the other side of the river.

Building a bridge wasn't an option?

Good question. I'm not sure why they didn't. It was about 130 degrees that day and I wasn't pondering deep thoughts.

Wife and I had a 3 day cruise for our honeymoon. We loved it. Never got sick, threw up or had any stomach troubles at all. We stopped at the cruise-line-owned island and rented snorkel gear for the day 'inport', not free, but not prohibitive either.
All the people we met/were forced to eat with were really cool -no pretentious attitudes or anything.
The seas were "bad" on the way out, and the ship ("soverign of the seas") rocked a little, but way less than any seagoing vessel I'd been on up until that point (688 class sub, or 1600ton research vessel)
the food was fantastic. Every meal, no matter where you ate, phenominal. Service details were impeccable (animal sculpture towels on bed, clean, polite staff....everything- the cruise lines know how much they cost and they deliver.

I'd go on a cruise again, but given that a 3 day cruise (on anything) costs as much/more than my car, it probably wont happen again...ever.

I WOULD have paid extra for the "tour of engine room and bridge", but I don't think they were offering that as an option =)

I'd recommend going on one if you havent - wife and I loved it. Just do 3 days, feel like an earth-killing demon (all that diesel fuel....Noooooo !) and then go home =)

If the earth was taken-over by mercedesshoppers (oh sorry, Peachpartsers) and the cruise lines went out of business, I wouldn't cry, but I would miss their big machines.

I've been a a couple of cruises (my wife's idea) and they are OK, but not my favorite type of vacation. A cruise with plenty of destinations is more interesting because you are not stuck on the ship, it's more like a mobile hotel room. I do like the "all inclusive" aspect of the cruise because you don't have to deal with money constantly; but I prefer an all inclusive resort on dry land because you can get away on your own schedule.

If you haven't taken a cruise, it's worth a try to see if you like it.

Yep, plus the point at least for me about being on the water is being AWAY from people. Being alone on the water is peaceful.

I'd rather be in my own secluded little inlet with just my family and friends than on some floating hotel sitting at a pool full of kids and strangers.

In order to find said secluded inlet...."Your gonna need a bigger boat"

Yeah working on that, I see a Shamrock center console in my future.

Can't afford a Swan yet. When I get my Swan I'm really going to get away...like by going for a sail to South Africa see you in two or three years.

Sure, but owning a boat is a bit more of a commitment than hopping on a cruise ship, and I can't sail to save my ass. I guess you can hire a private boat with a crew, but that's fairly expensive.

Personally, I prefer to rent a cabin in the mountains and go skiing, then I don't have to figure out how to rig a sail.

But sailing is a blast. If I could afford it I'd be a sailing bum for the rest of my life. I know some lucky SOB's who come from a lot of money and never really have to work. They just sail, crew and teach sailing.
