No-one is going to bomb an active site. If someone did decide to do something, it would happen long before it was completed (sometime in the next 5-10 years), with no material on site.

It's no more likely that this proposed site would be attacked than the existing operating site(s) which have not been touched by anyone (including Israel and previous U.S. administrations).

The U.S. has no basis to take unilateral action anyway, the UN will continue to inspect and argue with them until some kind of agreement is reached. Israel is unlikely to do anything unless/until there is a direct threat to them. This is probably nothing more than a negotiating ploy.

And who is to say that Iraq won't unite with Israel, Afghanistan, and a few other vassal states in the area to suppress a long term antagonist? Who would stand with Iran at this point?

How can we ever hope to change the hearts and minds of these poor downtrodden and yet peace-loving people if we keep threatening them with destruction?
If they do produce a bomb, they will only use it to destroy Israel which would in one fell swoop fix all of the problems in the Middle East forever.

What we should be doing right now is encouraging the Israelis to simply pack up and move to someplace where they will not stir up controversy. I vote for Florida...

The folks that the U.S. has put in charge of Iraq are very tight with Iran, a good chunk of Iraq will probably end up belonging to Iran before this is done.

I don't see Israel joining forces with any of these states under any circumstances.

Afghanistan doesn't even have a functioning government, they won't be uniting with anyone anytime soon.

Osirak bombings - brief history.

Although most agreed that Iraq was years away from being able to build a nuclear weapon, the Iranians and the Israelis felt any raid must occur well before nuclear fuel was loaded to prevent radioactive contamination. Further, Israel's Menachem Begin feared that Israel's next elected government would not act until a nuclear weapon was created[citation needed].

Iran attacked and damaged the site on September 30, 1980 with two F-4 Phantoms, shortly after the outbreak of the Iran-Iraq War. This was the first attack on a nuclear reactor and only the third on a nuclear facility in history of the world. It was also the first instance of a pre-emptive attack on a nuclear reactor to forestall the development of a nuclear weapon, though it did not achieve its objective as France repaired the reactor after the Iranian attack.[8][9][10][11][12]

In Israel, intelligence agencies authorized an air strike based on the fear that Iraq would use the nuclear fuel to produce weapons. This took place on June 7, 1981, in what was known as Operation Opera. The Israeli Air Force launched a strike with eight F-16 multi-role fighters and six F-15s for escorts, which flew from Etzion Airbase.

Israel won't dawdle. Didn't against Saddam. Didn't against Syria in 2007. Didn't against Eqypt and Syria in 1967. Nothing in their past actions should give anyone the idea or hope that they won't act alone in what they perceive to be in their national interests.

I agree that when they do, the reaction on the "Arab street" will be muted.

No, they won't. They tend to take advantage of critical actionable intelligence, rather than him, haw and debate. They fully understand actionable becomes expired (sometimes) in a matter of minutes. They are also very successful in recruiting on the outside - remember Mossad had Arafat's driver.

Well, you know, Arabs still call it the "Arabian Gulf" and every Arab I met over there did NOT like Iranians. I talked with a few Emiratis and East Sudanese. They definitely sided with Saddam against Iran but they didn't mind when he and his sons were take out. What bothered them was it was not an army of their own tribe (or race) that did it. Now that I've stirred the pot, I've got a leaking sink to fix.

not sure about florida, but

actually, zionism (and the creation of israel) started this whole mess; sadly, most people fall for the propaganda, and equate anti-zionism with anti-semitism.

as to the destruction of israel - well, that would be genocide. best we can hope for is some peaceful co-existence, since the illegal formation of israel and the 60 years of emigration and settlement means there are several million people now living there, albeit illegally. (blame the americans and the brits and the christians.)

trust me, the palestinians will, sadly, end up with the short straw, as it were.

Just out of curiosity, did any of them think that there actually was an army of theirs that could have done it? Or was it their knowledge of their own impotence that pissed them off the most?

well, it's good to know that, with all our alleged progress towards a more civilized world, uh, "might makes right" still seems to be the overriding principle of the day. bring on the dark ages.

RAMALLAH, West Bank – Israel announced Monday it is building nearly 700 new apartments for Jews in east Jerusalem, where Palestinians hope to set up the capital of a future state. The U.S., Palestinians and the European Union condemned the plan, a fresh setback to American efforts to restart Mideast peace talks.

The Palestinians have said they will not resume talks without an Israeli settlement freeze, and criticized what they said was another show of bad faith by Israel.

"With each individual action it undertakes on the ground, Israel is saying no to meaningful negotiations," said Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat.
President Barack Obama's Mideast envoy, George Mitchell, who is trying to find a formula for reviving negotiations, is due in Israel and the West Bank in the second week of January.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said the U.S. "opposes new Israeli construction in east Jerusalem" and that neither side should take steps that pre-empt the outcome of talks. He urged both sides to restart negotiations without preconditions.

Sweden, which holds the rotating European Union presidency, said Israel's latest plans "prevent the creation of an atmosphere conducive to resuming negotiations on a two-state solution."

Israel insists the Jewish neighborhoods in east Jerusalem are not settlements, but part of its own capital, a view disputed by the international community.

The plan announced Monday takes the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu into new political territory, by initiating construction for Jews in east Jerusalem. Up to now, the government has been saying it was endorsing plans already in the pipeline. Israel's Housing Ministry confirmed that the new construction bids are Netanyahu's first in east Jerusalem.

The GCC folks KNEW they could have (had the capability and still do) but they (Arab leaders in the cultural sense) him, haw and debate rather than carry out actions on difficult decisions.

From your link...

The Palestinians say his offer is not genuine since it does not include east Jerusalem, which they want as the capital of a future state, or 3,000 housing units under construction.

The construction never stopped in East Jerusalem and now it is being expanded. Explain how this supports your contention that Obama has "explained what side of the bread the butter is on and now there is a halt to settlement construction".

Obviously it is Obama who is receiving the education in power politics.
