Winter is what keeps the fire ants, Burmese pythons, and southern rednecks away.
The Adirondacks are truly picturesque, but the black flys and spring mud are enough to keep me here in PA.

I don't mind winter, its not that bad. I'd mind it even less when I can afford to spend most of it in a warmer place.

Come to Phoenix. Our winters are GREAT!

Plus there's lost more shooting fun around here than back where you are

The summers are like an oven though.

Lake effect snow sucks though.

The East Coast recently had 18" - 24" of snow.

More like a nuclear powered blast furnace, but who cares, we have the wonderful invention called AC.

Love to but its to far away from an ocean. 20 minutes away from salt is as far inland as I could live.

Brrr

"Between Ripley New York and Erie Pennsylvania. They can't keep the roads clear enough because the snow is falling so quickly. "

Got the opportunity to spend a night in the Ripley High School gym 20 years ago with 400 new friends when they closed I-90. The local folks were wonderful feeding us and providing blankets. Good luck and drive safely around there.

Back in the late 60's my dad was driving to Arcade NY. Got caught in a blizzard, had to hike about 2 miles to a farmhouse, got frostbite and spent 3 days at the farmhouse before he was able to get out.

Back in 1989? Wasn't that the really intense Noreaster that the perfect storm is based on?

My old orchestra teacher told us a story that for one of the PMEA district festivals they had kids sleeping in the auditorium of McDowell High School. Thank goodness I've never had to deal with that.

It's normally not this bad. At best it happens at least once or twice during the winter with heavy snow fall.

Lately though it gets bone chilling cold mixed with snow. I can deal with snow, but 10-12 degrees is just ungodly cold and makes driving horrific since the tires become so hard.

I would love to live in Arizona. Benzy would just adore the heat, but I would probably have to invest in getting the air conditioner fixed

Think it was '85

Adam,

I think this was around '85, just a day or so ahead of Christmas. We ended up buying an '86 Isuzu Trooper with 4wd after that trip. I guess in Erie it could be just about any year ;-).

We were stuck in the high school for about 18 hours. A state trooper came in and said it finally stopped snowing, but it would be 4 hours 'till I90 opened up. He said they had been continuously plowing Rt 20? 5? and that it should be open. 4 carloads of us headed out together at 5am Christmas morning and it took 5 hours to get to Buffalo.

Again, the local folks were truly wonderful and generous with food, blankets, and hospitality.

Chuck

The worst Blizzard in Buffalo's (WNY) history happened in 1977. It lasted 25 hours and killed 29 people. For those that are interested it really is a good read. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Lakes_Blizzard_of_1977 and a slide show http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-gRb_MuUgg . The only blizzard declared a natural and national disaster by the American and Canadian governments.

was there

I was living in Buffalo then, going to college and working for my future father in law in his landscaping / snowplowing business. That storm was amazing due to the wind. There was about 12" of snow on the ground and another 12" or so fell, but very high winds for like 36 hours. It made 2 story drifts around anything stationary. We dug out 1 car for a customer and it wouldn't start. Opened the hood and the complete engine compartment was solid snow. You could see the imprint of the underside of the hood in the snow. Lots of stories there. There are still Blizzard of 77 reunions and we have a board game that was sold for the blizzard.

I was living at home, but was at a dorm nearby helping a friend rebuild his carb that Friday. We went in at lunch to warm up, and blam... complete white out. Finally on Sunday I dug my car out and made it home. We plowed snow for a week straight to get everything clear.

Buffalo is wonderful in the summer, but winters are way too long. I've been in SC/NC since '78.
