I'm a 13th generation American, and basically white, but I took a DNA test to confirm Native American ancestry. So am I allowed to check Native American?

What about "Hispanic", which is not a race? It just describes people from Latin America. People from Spain would never describe themselves as Hispanic. Hispanics can be any race or mixed race.

Also, my kids are half Japanese. Which box should they check?

You should ask the census people those questions. BTW, only Person 1, not the children or spouse, is asked to complete those questions.

What is interesting is that we were forced to check a race box when we enrolled them in school (they're in the first grade).

I was surprised that I was not given the option to check more than one box. The instructions direct you to check only one box.

I refused to check just one race for my kids, and handed it in blank.

Before I walked out, the lady at the front desk waved my over, and whispered to me that if a parent doesn't check a box, then the school would select one for them. When I asked which box they would check for my kids, who by the way, look predominantly Asian, she replied that they would select the race of the father.

So as far as the school district is concerned, my kids are white.

The instructions read "check one or more boxes". Maybe you should take deep breath and slowly re-read the census form.

If you read carefully, I was taking about the enrollment form at our local elementary school.

I got no complaint so long a Acorn has nothing to do with the Census.

Door knockers are paid 17.00 per hour I was told by a woman running training classes for the temps. They start at 14.00 for other positions. I'm sure it's not hard work, but it's not much job security.

I know that, and it is also about the idea of racial classification, and my specific comment was about choosing a race for my kids at school, which you overlooked.

And you don't need to tell me to "....take a deep breath".

What your kids experience at school has little bearing on a Federal census.

It's usually best to just ignore such questions, what are they going to do about it?

That also applies to the US census; if you choose to respond, answer what you're comfortable answering.

MN Representative, Michelle Bachmann, has called for a boycott of sorts of the census.

More recently Bachmann has urged her supporters to respond to the census but disclose no information other than the number of people living in their household. By her reading, that's all the Constitution requires. "Enough is enough" to "government intrusion," she said, on Glenn Beck'sFox News TV show, where she also observed that the census was an early step in the process that led to the internment

Apparently, Ms. Bachmann was informed that her US House District seat could be affected by the census. And that kids, is irony.

Interesting, I don't remember answering the last one; I probably just tossed it.
