Tire suggestions for a poor college student
I am in need of purchasing new tires and I was wondering what type of tires were recommended for someone on a budget. I would like to get michelin harmony's, but my bank account disagrees with me

General Altimax HP's from TireRack.com....I have them on my 300E and they are awesome, incredible traction, good treadlife, quiet on the highway....and only about $65ish apiece!

Craigslist! Search daily and religiously. I buy all my tires used now. People sell tires for all types of reasons and usually very cheap. I have purchased 7 sets of tires this way and paid 20%-30% of new value for tires with less than 10K on them, one set was actually NEW with stickers on them. This takes some effort and can take a while to find what you want but there are screaming deals out there. Ebay can work too if you can find a seller thats local to you. Shipping is cost prohibitive.

Go to your 'local tire store' and see what they've got in 'pulls' which is where someone doesn't like the factory tires on a new car, and they pull them off and put another type/style/brand on. You might find brand-new for the price of used.

Check at a tire shop about used tires as well... If you're not usually running around in bad driving weather, tires with 50% tread left work well. A friend of mine gets them for about $20 a tire...

Buying tires used is dicey business. When I was young and poor I did so often but eventually looked at the cost of mounting and balancing a lot more often and decided that biting the bullet and buying new good tires was cheaper in the long run. Buying them on ebay or craigs list if you can find really nice tires might be worth a look.

I bought tires once from Craigslist - twp were way out of round. So I ended up buying another two to replace that one - from Discount Tire which ate up any savings I would have had. My employee buys tires on Craigslist and he's had the same problem two of three times.
The problem with CL tires is that you don't know what you buy until you get them installed; I've been burned so that isn't an option anymore.

The problem with new tires is that you don't know what you bought until you get them installed. Unless you buy Michelin, it's a crapshoot. Don't even think the dealer will take them back if you complain about runout issues..........unless the tire is truly defective and shaped like a brick.

X3 on the Generals.. About 3000 miles on them now. Great ride and great in the rain. Don't be fooled by the cheap price of Fuzions.. They were on the Nissan when we got it.. Horrible after 10K. Car sounded like it had 4 bad bearings.. The local Discount Tire even matched Tire Rack's prices. We got 6 Altimax' for 2 cars, mount/Balance/Valves/ Road Hazard and tax for $645...

Buying a used tire is simple but you have to know what to look for and what to ask. Why did they come off? What were they on? You are looking for a tire(s) that was removed because the PO "upgraded", larger, higher performance, etc.
I got 4 tires from a brand new Toyota Tacoma just because the owner wanted an "offroad" tire. The truck was sitting in the driveway on the new offroad tires when I went to look at the takeoffs. Easy sale. $185 Grabbed almost the same deal on a full set of E rated heavy duty tires from a new GM truck as the truck was purchased to be used ONLY as a plow truck. The new GM installed tires were "like new" as expected. $250 Got 4 like new snow tires for my wifes car from someone who traded a car in and forgot about the snow tires in the basement! They didn't fit the new car...... $100 Etc. etc. You have to know what you are looking at and what to look for. A used tire is much harder to judge the more miles it has on it. Out of round conditions, etc. can be spotted if you look very carefully at tread depth. The wear is usually not uniform so if you measure tread depth at 4 different locations 90* apart and across the tread you will usually see the discrepancies. Run your hands over the tire surface and sidewalls, it should be smooth in all ways, no undulations, no "serrated" feel to the treads, etc. You can feel the difference in most cases. Lastly I have a local garage that does mount/balance for $12.50 a wheel if you bring them in off the car. Cash payment and they dispose of the old tire for you. The fact that the big "McTire" shops get $25 per tire is outrageous for something that can be done in less than 15 minutes. RT
