Suggestions for my computer, it's getting pretty slow (A-gain!)
Hey, what's your latest freebie computer cleaning suggestions? Getting pretty slow to load pages, pretty bad. I get this once in awhile.
I have freebie versions of "Superantispyware" and a free registry cleaner "Eusing Free Register Cleaner". They come up with stuff all the time, but I think something is dodging them. Did the disc cleanup utility and defrag, so I am trying. Did a "dskchk", found a few things it didn't like, but still have problems. Not bad at the moment. Usual "sheep" equipment, Dell with Windows XP Media Edition. Hoping someone has a few good ideas for me. Take it easy on me, I know just enough to get in trouble. Sometimes even outlook express doesn't want to connect to my server, get "POP3" errors and that sort of thing. At times almost bad enough to consider reformatting the disc, but that's pretty drastic. By slow what do you mean? Is it the entire computer or just when you surf web pages?
If it's the entire computer run this utility's optimizer http://www.tweakxp.com/ It helps a lot and eliminates some of the junk that comes with running windows. However, and I tell this to a lot of people. Reformating a computer is a face lift for operating systems like windows. Consider doing it once a year. Now if it is just slow surfing the internet download these programs: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/personal.html and install this add on http://adblockplus.org/en/ The addon I mentioned removes advertisements from loading on web sites. Ads are the largest vector of attack on the internet. Some things to keep in mind: 1. Never ever use internet explorer for anything. 2. Make sure Java, flash, and anything adobe is updated regularly 3. Run updated drivers. 4. Restarting your DSL/Cable modem does wonders for improving speed sometimes 5. Never ever use internet explorer for anything. 1 and 5 are the strongest points I'd like to make.

I still swear by avast antivirus and ZoneAlarm firewall, not needed so much anymore since I run a physical firewall now, but still good for peace of mind.
The other key is to not screw around on sites that have viruses-
|

Insert Windows CD, go to BIOS (usually F8 or F10 or F12 on the black screen startup) and select boot from CD. Windows will wipe the HD clean of everything so you lose your music, docs, p0rn, programs, everything and start fresh. You will obviously need to back up everything you value.
Also, because Windows XP is antiquated and sucks (Win7 automatically does this all for you), you will have to download video drivers and motherboard drivers so your display will work properly and all your motherboard's functions (sound, ethernet etc) will work properly.

AVG anti-virus is a great FREE virus protection program. and IObit Security 360 is a great anti-spyware/malware program. i would suggest downloading them.

Run Malwarebytes and AVG (updated). As always, make sure Windows Update is turned on automatically so you can receive security updates as soon as they are released. Good luck!

I'll suggest against anything from free from AVG, there are still items left over from that fiasco.
I use PC Tools, it's a pay service tho.
