I was going to buy a bar from a freind of mine, he talked me out of it. The headaches are huge and the returns few. He made a lot more running a limo service out of the bar, the booze was cheaper and a lot of parties started and returned to his bar. He specialized in bar crawls and bachelor/bachlorette parties. he also kept relatives behind the bar, nieces and nephews, brothers etc. BTW, it would be risky enough by yourself, but the quickest way to lose a freind is to go in business with them.

See Army's post about the owner not having friends. Same with family. I would NEVER do business with family. I might sell friends and family something up to a couple hundred bucks but that is it. They will ask for the "family discount" and should something go wrong with the purchase, woe betide you. If I sold you my car and your check cleared, it is yours. It blows up 10 feet from my driveway and I can walk away. If it is family, I'll probably be hearing about the lemon I sold 30 years from then. No thanx. As strangers, I let you test the product to your heart's content, within reason, and if something goes sideways, sorry. You did sign the "As IS, no warranties expressed or implied" form.

Open a brew pub. Your product costs less, tastes better, and can be distributed to liquor stores as well. Also, you remove the hard liquor and you remove a large percentage of the hardcore drunks. Equipment can be pricey, but if you keep your eyes and ears open, there is always someone either upgrading or going under...used equipment is much cheaper.
I would even consider cutting you a break on teaching you how to brew

Brewpubs are awesome. Gastropubs even more awesome. I have yet to go to a gastropub that brews their own. But these days you can get pretty good beer delivered to any pub.

not saying it works for everyone, but it worked for him. hard to let strangers handle so much cash. Like I said, I thought about it, but owning a bar seemed like way to much work for too little return, even where he was which was packed every night.

Keep at just that...an idea that gets tossed around. My brother-in-law just got out of his bar. He owned it for three years. I know he lost about $80-100k during that time...and that is only what I KNOW he lost. I'm sure it was more. Unless you are an incredibly saavy and successful business person or have a ton of money to use upfront, I would stay FAR away from bringing the "idea" to fruition.

That is why I prefer to use OPM when in a business. First I would get a job as a bartender and get into management. That way I learn how to run a bar on Other People's Money. Then I would borrow the money so the bank looks over my business plan and see if they can poke holes in it. If it screws up, it's not my personal fortune we are talking about. Obviously, you will pay a premium for that protection.
