OT: VW Toureg opinions

Anybody have a recommendation on a Toureg? Good or bad? I have had a few Jeeps, pretty bulletproof. Looking for a possible upgrade.

thanks
Fred

A buddy of mine that lives in Baldwin, KS bought one brand new with a V8 a few years ago.

It was a great car with a fantastically upscale interior, but it got horrendously bad fuel economy, which led him to eventually replace it with a Yukon hybrid.

I think he was getting 13 - 14 mpg in mixed driving.

Never heard of a Jeep diesel - has to be an import.

To the OP, a V10 TDI is the way to go, or just get a V6, but weight will overtax acceleration.

Take a few test drives in various ones and see.

they came out in 05 i believe with the liberty.i've heard rumors of upper 30's mpg wise with a few mods.they do have torque converter issues though, make sure it's been changed.i have been looking to find a cheap one but to no avail.they seem to like to hold thier value.in 07 or 08 they came out with a grand wagonner with the 3.0 v6 blue-tec mercedes engine. they really hold their price.i'd sure like to try one for a week or two.heres one close to ya. http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?ct=u&car_id=279225734&dealer_id=343146&car_year=2007&rdm=1274014943177&lastStartYear=1981&model=&num_records=25&systime=&make2=&highlightFirstMakeModel=&start_year=2005&keywordsfyc=&keywordsrep=&engine=&certified=&body_code=0&fuel=Diesel&awsp=false&search_type=both&distance=200&marketZipError=false&search_lang=en&showZipError=n&make=JEEP&keywords_display=&color=&page_location=findacar%3A%3Aispsearchform&min_price=&drive=&default_sort=priceDESC&seller_type=b&max_mileage=&style_flag=1&sort_type=priceDESC&address=75208&advanced=y&end_year=2011&doors=&transmission=&max_price=&cardist=7&standard=false

It was the Mercedes diesel engine back when Daimler and Chrysler were still married. They had mostly Libertys but a few Grand Cherokees had them too.

Lousy VW service dept. plus unreliable electronics totally destroys the Touareg. Nice concept bad execution and even worse fuel economy.

As of late 2009, the diesel engine Jeep uses is a VM Motori-sourced 3.0 v6. Those who are up on the diesel scene will recognize VM Motori as the Italian company who bought Detroit Diesel.

A friend bought one when they first came out, aiming to keep it 2 years and take it back to Holland when his expat contract was up. That car was a horror story and a half. It was just amazing how many warranty claims he had, and how much time it was in the shop. Last thing I remember was that the transfer case had to be replaced.

He did export it and sold it as soon as he arrived home in Holland, dumping that beast on some poor soul there...

I think BohdiBenz has one of those.

What scares me off from them is the fact that they were only made for a couple of years. I think it will be an orphan when it comes to finding parts. Just like the 80's diesel Jeeps with the Renault engines.

I hear the ones with air suspensions like to burn through tires ever 15,000 miles. I'd also be very leery of a V10. The 4 cylinder PD motors have enough top end oiling problems... I'd hate to think of how much it would cost to replace the camshafts in a V10 after they got munched up.

The new common rail V6 has more then enough power for that truck. The V10 can almost lift the front wheels off the ground from a stop One tuner I know won't touch the V10 because you start breaking transmissions and driveshafts when you turn them up
