Here's a pic of how a TN compares to an IPS...IPS is on the left, TN on the right. As I mentioned, on smaller screens, the effect is less noticeable. On a larger screen, you really notice it, IMO.

Are these them Chris?

I'd like to get back into gaming so I wanted a computer that has some power. I have always bought cheap computers $400 or less and have been very disapointed with their performance sometimes when I load a game. It would be nice to just be able to buy whatever game I want and have it work well.

Experience with ASUS

My sister is taking my computer, so I'm going to need another one. A larger moniter would be a plus.

I'm pretty much going to be using it to serf online, play some games, word processing and watch movies.

My experience with ASUS is they do not support their products at all. I have had ASUS scanners that were "abandoned" by ASUS during the warranty period. They have a lot of negative feedback about the poor build quality on their netbooks. Gateway is no better. Think "EMachine" with a higher price tag or "Alienware" with a lower pricetag. All the same crap in a pretty box.

Try Lenovo, even though they are owned by the chinese, the USA end still runs their show like IBM always did-take care of the customer and honor the warranty and they still stock parts and service machines that are 8 years old.

AMD overcloking

Core i7's are the most powerful processors right now. In fact Intel has been at the top for about 4 or 5 years now. Basically all AMD has right now is good prices. That said, I always go AMD because im a cheap bastard.

pawoSD where you do get this AMD BS you constantly spout? No benchmarks or charts or reviews say it is more powerful than a core i7. Not that the AMD Phenom is a bad processor (i use one and it's great for the money, i paid 90 bucks for it), but lying about it to someone who is buying a computer smacks of some extreme fanboyism.

If hattie is doing some heavy video encoding or 3d rendering (he's not) i would recommend a 6 core processor but otherwise.. no point.
Intel has ALWAYS been better than AMD. AMD overclocks to get performance and thus if there is an overheat situation the AMD will FAIL while the Intel will survive.

Check You Toob for the video...

If you're consistently taxing the four cores on the i7, you can turn on HT and it might actually help. This isn't your father's HT, it's a completely new implementation and really only shares the name with the predecessor. With the current HT (SMT), you can run two threads at full speed on one core. The threads actually run at the same time. What you lose now with HT turned on is the additional ALU for processing the instruction stream. With HT off, the one thread on each core gets two ALUs, just like it's always been. And almost all of the time, one or both of those ALUs are stalled. With HT on, each thread on each core gets a single ALU, but the rest of the control pieces are duplicated. You'll stall the ALU less, but instructions streams that could have been parallelized between two ALUs will need more clock cycles to complete.

No.. Intel was junk during the Pentium 4 era. Well maybe not junk, but not as good as Athlons. They didn't really get good again till the Core2Duos.

Do you guys run something like Prime95 on your systems to test stability?

I downloaded the equivalent for Linux, mprime, and it's pretty cool. Maybe I should say pretty hot, because it pushes my CPU temperature to 86C. No errors reported at that temperature, but I only ran it for a few hours. Baseline temperature is under 40C (<20% usage on any core).

I was worried about my memory, since it is not ECC. It's hard to find non-server boards that support ECC these days; used to be easy. I might have to get a server board, but then I'd be very, very tempted to fill both sockets. Don't know what I'd do with 16 logical processors, but I'm sure that I would figure something out.

That's the Dell, yes. That HP is the older model. The newer model is the ZR24w. Might be harder to find online right now, it only came out a few months ago. If you decide on a Dell, buy from them direct, they always have sales. Or open a small business account with them and speak with a rep. They'll usually offer a good discount if you ask politely. The benefit of buying from Dell.com is that if you have any issues with the monitor - any tinting or dead pixels, you can return/exchange within 21 days of purchase for a new replacement. This monitor (U2410) has Dell's premium panel guarantee.

I just looked, it appears to be on sale from Dell right now, $499. I paid $599 CDN (reg. $799).

If you want good game performance, then yes, buy the best you can and the 5870 is a great card (for now at least).

Looks like the HP is $90 cheaper, might go with that one insted of the dell.

It's a nice monitor! Just check return/exchange options in case there is a problem with it (damage during shipping, etc.).
