One clue no one has touched on...

See where the President's at.

If he came home from the G20, it's international...nation responsible to be determined.

If he's still at the G20, it's internal and someone will get his "brass" polished in a very painful way, unless of course, it was "pre-approved" - but for what reason we'll never know.

Good luck and happy guessing!

Bet someone accidentally pressed The Button... obviously military doesn't want to own up to screwing something like that up. Why would the gov not want to demonize a possible "Axis of Evil" country if they are responsible?

I read some of the people's comments on the forum within this 'reuters' site . Some nit-wit chest pounders (that's to be expected),and like I do on 'shop-forum'-brush rite by these imbeciles comments- there were also, some very enlightened brothers, speaking. Maybe it was just boys with there toys. They never found any remains did they.
Military doing some early warning testing?
A weather balloon with a flair attached?
If enough of you guys make enough noise, the explanations will start.
Maybe aliens?
A UFO ?

I highly doubt a diesel electric could stay under long enough to sneak that close to a busy port. Plus they are noisy.
According to a globalsecurity.org article, next generation diesel-electric subs are viewed as a significant threat because of their stealthy nature when operating in electric mode and an overall decrease in post-cold war sub hunting skills. Case in point is the unexpected appearance of a Chinese Song class diesel sub surfacing within sight of the USS Kitty Hawk in 2006.

The French (Scorpion class) and Germans (Dolphin class) have highly advanced diesel subs utilizing AIP and fuel cells...for sale.

Agreed, Diesel-electric subs should not be underestimated. An SS can sit and wait in near total silence running on it's batteries just waiting for a target to come within weapons range. Only way to pick up that lurker is to bang away with active sonar which is limited in range and will give the sub a very accurate picture of what's coming and from where.

In contrast you can't just turn off the nuclear reactor on an SSN...the coolant pumps have to run constantly. This is why the sound deadening on an SSN has to be so extensive.

X2

Knowing that she was in Orange Co yesterday -
I’d bet it was Shelby pumping auto transmission fluid through her Beech 400A (again).

Yes but their is a lot more to it, granted my dad's info is older but a lot of the boats from the 80's are still around. For example my dad said Kilo's are loud they could hear and track them without any issues.

A lot of a subs noise comes from the prop, that's one of the most sensitive technical parts on the ship. They used to always cover them up when they were out of the water. We spend a lot more money on tuning than they do.

My dad said what they used to do is take the boat out and run it while having another vessel listen. Depending on what they heard they would go back and tune the prop.

Diesel electric boats while quite are very limited in submerged speed and range.

We got the best toys though:

They may not want to tell us what it is. OK, that is government's call--I may disagree, but I can understand.
What I hate is when they think we are all idiots so they can tell a lie, " Its a plane...", and expect us to believe that.

They are still denying the existence of the Aurora project as well. I do wish they would just say we know but we ain't going to tell you because it's a big secret.

Refer to the 1966 batman movie for the proper use of a "pre-atomic submarine."

The Jimmy Carter- Not your average Seawolf. I have fond memories of working in the aft tanks on that, still have a scar from the burn I got from the torch end as well. I only got to work inside the pressure hull once, lots of fake wood paneling from what I remember. The Virginia had almost as much, you'd think it was a Toyota the way they plaster them up.
