A 190 or a w123 or even a w114 would be a better proposition. You are buying it? At that age they should give it to you or pay you to take it!!! Do you drive like a volvo driver?

My dad had a 71 or 2. He loved it. They are cars which handle surprisingly well if you push them. At moderate speeds you think they handle like a like aged American sedan but push them and they dig in.
They are extremely simple and robust. The only real weak point is the electrical stuff. Some is bosch which is excellent but some is Lucas. There is also IIRC a fuse which if it blows you lose your spark. I had a 76 Volvo and had the fuse blow in traffic in West Lafayette one day. You learn to keep a good supply of fuses with them. Nice cars. Mechanically as strong as a benz but electrically not so. That push rod engine has enormous bearings which if you keep the oil changed you will never wear out...and the cam is gear driven. Keep fuses handy though!

I get the impression that these old Volvos are not as well built as the cars from the 1980s - saying that any car of that age needs to be assessed on the basis of condition. I think you'll find them to be quite heavy on fuel considering the performance you can get. I'm of the opinion that they are as stylish as brown corduroy, but hey each to his own if you like it and can get it for an agreeable price - good luck to you.
As for Volvo drivers:- Well I avoid 'em much like everyone else here in Europe but the funny thing is when you yourself get behind the wheel of one you are quickly transformed into a carefree oblivious idiot - it must be something they treat the upholstery with...

Is it going to be a play car or a daily driver? I can appreciate the "funky factor" of a 142. Funky is fine for a play/tinker around with car, less so for a daily driver.

When I got married my ex had a 1973 164E. It was a pretty good car and we didn't have too much trouble, iirc
 , with the new Bosch D Jetronic FIInline 3.0 six 4 speed manual with electronic overdrive. Fun car to drive  Wasn't real good on gas, but it was a nice, nimble hiway cruiser and we travelled a lot to central PA in those days. Maroon with a red leather interior. Sunroof. Many years ago, I rebuilt the engine in a 144, a 1968 I believe, that had been overheated with the result that one cylinder burned oil. A new piston cured that. As Tom W. said, the engine is pretty well built. What I noticed about the car was its mediocrity- it wasn't very powerful on one hand, and was not that economical on the other. Parts were expensive, also.
