Porsche Boxster vs SLK

What do I need to know when looking at one of these?

Year range 2005-2010
Any particular engines or transmissions to avoid?

Comparing it against an SLK of similar vintage which i'm already fairly well versed in.

Hair dressers cars.

Get a 911 or an SL, unless your buying it for your GF.

You only say that when you have never driven one. I know the Boxter has a hair dressers reputation and it's not the best looking Porsche but it's a better handling car than a 911 in my opinion. My old room mate had a 2000 911 and an early Boxter S; that Boxter would take turns like no other.

I would come of an off ramp doing 120mph with out even noticing it, with other cars at 90mph you would push it; glued to the road. If they would give the Boxter 911 power...and some better styling...(?)

Haha nope not buying, just doing the research for someone else.

One of the prerequisites is that the vehicle is sporty but not so fast that it's dangerous (which is why the 911 is out) The other one is color, is has to be bright (Yellow, red, or a light blue) Take a guess as to the gender of the person who's getting it

I like the Cayman, the coupe version of the Boxster. I haven't driven either one, but I love the looks of the Cayman. I like the look of that better than the 911.

I've driven and ridden in SLKs. If you 6' tall or more, they're painful . . .

Has to be a convertible. The new Mazda MX5 with the powered hardtop is on the list as is the Volvo C70.

I'm pretty sure she's only around 5'7 or so.

Clearly the musings of someone not well versed in either car but willing to parrot stereotypes and misconceptions.

Driven both and find that the Boxter is a better drivers car, with great balance and brakes compared to the heavier feeling SLK. The SLK is comfortable and a bit more Mercedes plush, but the auto box isn't really as much fun as the Box.

My brother in law went from a 911RS (loved the car, hated the seating bolsters and lack of golf bag space) and now drives a Boxster S. He finds it to be about 7-8/10ths of the 911, which makes it a good deal.

Boxster....and it's a real sports car, in the order of the 550. Hop up and add horspower to a Boxster and show your tail lights to a 911 in the twisties. Cayman the same way.

that being said, if the purpose is boulevard cruising, the CLk will be more liveable.

Driven both, don't like either. Won't buy a Caymen either even though IMHO its a better car; because you can't get to the engine.

Also I don't fit so well into the last generation and previous SLK, not sure about the latest one haven't driven the new one yet. I fit its just a bit more snug that I would prefer for such a car. Its just me though, I don't like the W123 either for the same reason, ie my feet are to big and hit under the dash around the pedals. For a 5'7" girl this would not be an issue.

IMHO for a good girls car check out the Z4 its IMHO a good roadster, get the new one though the previous one rides like crap. Or a Mustang is always a good choice.

To each there own, that's why they make so many different cars.

He thought about the Mustang but he's done with Ford even though her currently has two. BMWs aren't in the running (Image and all that) Jaguars and Lexus are also out.

So far things are leaning towards the Porsche with the Benz in 2nd place.

In that vintage the Porsche would be better built.

That's what i'm thinking as well. Also i've already noticed that it's much easier finding a colorful Porsche then a colorful SLK.

WHAT? That RS is like a quarter million bucks these days.

How big are your feet? I wear 14 wides and never had issues with W123s. In fact i think I had more trouble with 126's I do run into problems with smaller cars like SLK's and Miatas, but you make do. You might just accidentally hit the brakes instead of the gas like a geriatric

Check out the rear main seal and intermediate shaft problems that Boxster engines present. The seal problem can be fixed, the intermediate shaft failure can quickly destroy an engine.
