Unfortunately, from all indications, we have seemingly entered into global war #3.
First came the missiles from warships - check. Next came manned aircraft - check. Next come ground troops. Where are the confirmations of WMD? Why do we need Libya's oil? Why no outcry against the president? It doesn't make sense.

Hopefully it will go as SecDef outlined -- USA turns-over command and control and most operations to the other folks involved after a few more days.
I'm still kind of surprised that this president, who was pretty stridently opposed to the War Powers Act as senator and candidate, invoked it in his first term of office. George Bush's mini-me. |

It's our own law, passed by Congress. And yes, there are laws associated with war. The USA is a signatory of the Geneva Conventions. These are given the force of law through the UCMJ, civilian laws, and the chain of command.

One thing I dont understand concerning Col. Gadaffi. Since he is the leader of Libya- why didnt he promote himself to General.

It is also an Executive Order, originated by ( gasp!) RRR, and signed by all Presidents since with only minor revisions to the wording.

I am not convinced that Obama is doing the right thing in Libya, but this situation bears little resemblance to Bush's approach to foreign affairs and military matters.

Good article in the NYT about this new war....
But there are major problems with this approach to war as well. Because liberal wars depend on constant consensus-building within the (so-called) international community, they tend to be fought by committee, at a glacial pace, and with a caution that shades into tactical incompetence. And because their connection to the national interest is often tangential at best, they’re often fought with one hand behind our back and an eye on the exits, rather than with the full commitment that victory can require. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/21/opinion/21douthat.html?_r=1 Last edited by Txjake; 03-21-2011 at 01:43 PM. |
