I have noticed too many of these aveos with lower milage showing up on the car auction circuits here. Perhaps a reflection of high new sales numbers? More likely there are other reasons.

They are econoboxes. The new Aveo5 as its called appears to be selling well. It's not as cheap looking as the original.
Looking at the engine it looks easy to work on. |

Do what you can. Set limits and a deadline based on your school and work schedule, study time and exams; e.g "I can't work past X PM. Can you remind me so I'm not late..." Then set your watch or phone alarm, or ask a friend to call you to guarantee you follow your limits. Reconsider you mom's frame. What if she meant "I think you're a competent mechanic, but what if the car's too far gone? Will that be a waste of time and money and still leave us stuck?" Reconsider the cost of the valve cover gasket versus the cost of a leaky repair; particularly if you think there are concerns about your skill as a mechanic. What's a gasket cost? |

Think of it this way - working on these FWD 4 cylinder engines is a very good experience to have. Think of how many cars on the road are 4cyl and FWD, obviously they are all different but if you can get used to the tight spaces and the layout of things it is a nice big advantage when you go to work on cars for friends and family. 4cyl is so much easier than a FWD V6, trust me! My Gf has an eclipse and that thing is a breeze to work on since its all nicely laid out. My Stealth was a pain to do anything (not too bad after getting used to it), you'd have to take the plenum and entire intake system off to do anything towards the back of the engine...including simple stuff like spark plugs. I assume FWD V8s are even worse, like the new 5.3L GM cars, V8 caddys, etc. I digress. Anyways its a good experience to add if you can get your hands on it, though it sounds like you got a great quote.

Timing belt and water pump ordered from ********. Found a 5% off code online and used it. Woo, selected 3 day shipping since the 5% brought it to just a little bit more than regular ground. I want everything here on time.
Head comes off tomorrow. |

It looks stupid easy to work on dude, good luck! I bet with one good helper, u can knock it out in a day. I would get a FSM from pdftown.com, or your local library. It's NOT hard. on an easy acess 4 cylinder, I would leave the intake and possibly exhaust manifold on the head unless removal of them is very easy.
You never did PM me the info I asked for (year, engine size, and transmission) There's an 04 1.6 stickshift one in a yard here that would sell me the head for $150. Also, on ebay, you can get a reman for $375 ( New headbolts are a MUST! Please use high quality timing components! ~Nate

I have the fsm. I have 10 new head bolts. The exhaust manifold has to come off to remove the head. Intake stays until it's off the car. Thanks for looking for another head. The timing components are all oem quality.

It's running. But my step dad just called me and what I think he was describing is it hesitating when accelerating or something of that manner.
Just took it out for a spin. at 2500 rpm's the engine makes a horrible racket. Kind of like a knocking sound but at high revs. Then if you gas it, the engine hesitates. Plus my step dad said it was low on oil. He had to add 2-3 quarts to get it back to normal. I'm not exactly happy at the moment. |

I wonder if that machine shop didn't reassemble the head correctly, install stem seals correctly, etc.

You're probably correct on that manner. Calling my mechanic after class and see what we should do.
