Didn't realize you could cut metal with settling.

Imagine how many potential sales he lost due to people not knowing about "settling"

I like how both pictures are sideways at the exact same angle. But taken at slightly different times of day. I thought they were the same pic at first.

Actually, I shouldn't laugh. I moved to this country when I was 11 and learned a new word from my friends as we were building a clubhouse--tuberfor. It was quite a few years before I figured out that what they had been saying was 2x4.

Now THAT'S funny!

I've worked construction in many parts of this country and I was always amazed at all the local terms used.

Try to find laths out here in the west. They stare blankly until you remember they are called "firring strips" west of the big M.

You had to make sure your local laborer knew exactly what you were talking about.

Well the guy cleary is wrongheaded. It's 'a settling bottle,' not just 'settling bottle.'

In my trade, I've notices how different parts of the country have different terms for the same thing. I've always called it a die button, which is how it is referred to when ordering a replacement for a die. Here in the Pitts...they call it a Die Bushing. In Ohio, it's called a punch retainer, here it's called a punch block. In Ohio, it's called a die block...here, they call it a die chase.

It's taken me about 6 months just getting used to the language barrier.

Nope. You just ain't used to the local patois. I tell the guy to "go get me a handful of laths from the pile over there" and he says, "them things are purty fur away".

Just as funny as the lon mores, sluch hamers, sprinkelors, weel barrels and such that routinely turn up on Craigslist.

Add that to the general confusion for anyone learning English as a second ( or third) language. Its amazing that we can communicate at all.
On second thought, looking at some of the discussions here on OD, and it becomes apparent that maybe we CAN'T communicate.

We moved to US when I was 17. Went to high school right away and I remember in my English class we had to read "Of Mice and Men" - which was written as it was spoken (i.e. I dunno...). At that time I was reading every book with my dictionary at hand but that didn't work on this book because the words and phrases weren't spelled correctly... It was a bear to get through but I managed eventually...
