I'd say not. Leave them barefooted and pregnant. Or like the Ferrengi in DS9, naked so they can't go out and conduct commerce. Oh, wait, that changed in the last episode. Never mind.

Just so we are clear. Is it ok to break the law and expect no consequence in this cases because you approve of it or is it ok for anyone and everyone to simply decide for themselves when to break a rule? I understand you liked the results of the last crop of lawbreakers. Is it result dependent or how does this thing work?

Proportional consequences -- hauling people off to jail or fining them is one thing. Attacking them physically is quite another. Reaction should be proportional to the "crime." Here it was not.

I thought they were subduing them and hauling them off? As the guy in Karate Kid said "Man can't see, man can't fight".

It would have been so much simpler had they simply protested WITHIN THE LIMITS OF THE LAW but I guess you can't have as much fun with it or attract as much attention. Had they not pulled their stunts and the cops even chased them away and not even laid a hand on them, I'd agree with you that the cops are going too far. At that point, I'd agree that we have a group of upset people, exercising their right to assemble and have free speech that were bulled by some legal figure. Right now, what I see is a mob refusing a legal order that had to be subdued and removed.

So if the suffragettes chained themselves to a railing outside of Congress today (let's say that women didn't have the right to vote), you'd be all for spraying them in the eyes with pepper spray before cutting them off and hauling them to jail? Yes?

Big man.

Seeing as we have freedom of speech and freedom to assemble, I am unclear as to what laws these peacful demonstrators were breaking. Can someone help me out here?

I'm good with it but what is your point? That because you like the results in the past it can continue this way? Where can we draw that arbitrary line? When say the White Aryan Nation or the Klan decides to do the same thing to black people, jews, etc, etc? Or does the sauce for the goose not become sauce for the gander at that point?

Funny you should say that ... I didn't see police hosing down the Westboro Baptist creeps with pepper spray when they picketed military funerals and did other such fun things.

Looks to me, from the picture anyways that they were not simply protesting something. There is no need to block pathways when you are protesting something, is there?

Do you see the difference between a bunch of sign carrying people protesting the abortion clinic by walking around vs blocking the entrances to the clinic or parking lot? Or are both groups simply peaceful demonstrators?

Therein lies the question. Were they simply exercising their rights to protest or were they obstructing the funerals? I disagree with their protest point TO THE CORE and if an asteroid hits them, I won't shed a tear but I do support their right to protest AS LONG AS they do it within the law and not say stop the funeral vehicle from reaching it's destination, etc, etc, much as their point sickens me.

I think you got it right Tom, if that's any help. I doubt the president of UC Davis would be apologizing if the police were justified in their actions.
That, however, won't stop the fascists from whining.

Yeah, I guess it is not a reasonable expectation to ask someone to behave within the prescribed boundaries of the law.

The president of UC Davis thought the students were within the law, and she was there-and you were not. Whine on.
