The image of two policemen, walking slowly up and down a line of students sitting on the ground with arms linked, is about as far away from the image of policemen being professional, first responder, all American heroes as you can get.

Well, it is a dirty job but that is what they are paid to do. Clean out that trash. like I said, if it were somebody that is doing a legal protest, I'd be all over it but if you choose to be a rabble, don't get offended if you are treated as such. Just like I wouldn't approve of a guy hitting a lady, I have no issue if a guy slugs a girl for slugging him. Behave like trash, get treated as such. That is, unless, on the off chance you can show me that these people were legally assembled and not doing anything against the laws.

aklim, can't you just see the PD in every town using the video as recruitment gold? Who in their right mind wouldn't want to be that officer . . . spraying the roaches as you say . . . dare I say that every father would want their sons to be just like that officer. Heck, the university should erect a bronze statue depicting this act of bravery, heroism and professionalism at that very site. Police benevolent groups and organizations will surely petition him for sainthood, when he become eligible.

Perhaps you can clarify your point. That bad behavior should be rewarded? So if a bunch of white people decided that they don't want some black guy living amongst them, they should be able to take the law into their own hands and do a "sit in" on your residence until they force him to move? You seem to think that these people are heroes for breaking the law and thus should be spared the consequences of their action. Is that what you are saying? What is your underlying PRINCIPLE?

Once again, I find myself persuaded by your enlightened views. Your examples do indeed, point out the flaws in my observations.

Thanks to the wisdom that is aklim, I now know how foolhardy it would be to make an argument that individual liberties, free speech, or god forbid - standing up to those who are at odds with such antiquated principals - are somehow different from incest and slavery.

Wanna toss in an apple pie and wrap the flag around it too? This isn't about individual liberty, freedom of speech or standing up to anyone. You have a nice sound bite, I'll give you that. Not much else besides the sound bite though. Once you start blocking pathways and what not, you are no longer talking about freedom of speech or anything similar. If they had assembled lawfully and not force their views on others, I would agree. This is not the case and you know it.

aklim, where you see "reward" . . . others see the absence of reasonable and rational restraint.

Where you see "taking the law into their own hands" . . . others see the exercise of the right to assemble and free speech, on a college campus, which are widely recognized as bastions of indulging those very rights.

You see criminals, no different than terrorist, serial killers, father rapers (sorry, too much Alice's Restaurant this week) . . . while other see college students engaged in peaceful civil disobedience.

You see law enforcement . . . others see mindless, knee jerk brutality.

Hell no. The suffragettes staged sit-ins and chained themselves to railings outside of the Houses of Parliament. They were GASP! zOMG! ... VIOLATING THE LAW!

Which puts them on par with Jeff Dahmer and John Wayne Gacy. Same goes for that uppity ..... lady, Rosa Parks. How DARE she want to sit in front of the bus?

You do paint a rosy picture of the whole thing. Nobody is taking away their rights to free speech or assembly. Nobody is saying you can't protest this, that or the other. I see a difference between say a legal union picket line that doesn't block anyone wanting to go in or out vs somebody blocking my path. Where did I say you cannot protest something you don't like? As long as you don't infringe on others, knock yourself out. I support your right to assemble and free speech and long as you are not yelling in my ear.

Would you be as generous to the abortion protesters who destroy clinics, chain themselves to the doors, etc, etc? As long as they don't block the walkways, they can be like the people I see standing there and protesting abortion going on. I have no beef with that. When they cross the line and start obstructing my way, I don't call it civil disobedience, exercising their rights or what not. Would you be as generous to the Westboro group?
