The bottom of the hole was filled with Jags, Volvos and SAAB's from the 70's. All of them had been reported as theft cars, and all of them had owners that were upside down on them.
I think the cops just let it slide as the stat of limitations had run out.

Back in the 80's, the NYPD did an exploration of the river bottom under the Hellgate Bridge (crosses the East River/Harlem River and they form the Long Island Sound, It carries AMTRAK). The river at that point had been a nightmare back in the 19th Century until the city blasted the rock shoals away. When the tide changes the currents from the 2 rivers meeting and forming the sound means water moving in all 4 directions at different speeds/depths.
Anyway, they were looking for a certain mobster who was residing in the trunk of his Caddie. They found over 150 cars, 4 with occupants (3 in the trunk, 1 in the driver's seat). Seems it was the spot to "dump the evidence".
Same thing is prevalent in FLA in Everglades and Drainage canals, also in CT under several bridges.
