Ever seen this kludge?

Hey peach parts, ive been lurking your forums for a few years now, to help me out with my 1984 300d turbo, my first car. Just wanted to say thanks for the help you have been unknowingly providing this budding w123 enthusiast. My parents are piss poor, couldnt afford to help me buy it, I flipped burgers for years just to afford it. $2000 seemed like so much back then. Now i've got at least that much in parts in the two years i've owned it. I'm not a man of means, but I love my car and do whatever is necessary to keep her going. For this reason, benz purists might see my car as an abomination. And I kind of agree, but for the most part, just kludge the hell out of it, and dont care as long as she gets me there. anyways, I figure im twenty three now, time to grow up and register, so I can list off my kludges abd imagine you guys chuckling laugh track style in the background. Here goes...So after pulling the instrument cluster to chase down the obligatory oil leak, I noticed the leak was coming from the oil pressure unit, and not the cable. So sick of oily shoes, I took a mini vise grip to the oil line, engine side, propped it up against the break booster, and pinched it off till I could get a part number for the cluster unit. Been driving like that just fine for a week or so. Can I expect any negative effects other than no pressure readout? Also, anyone know what that thingy is called?

Yes. I had a friend who ignored a non-functioning oil pressure gauge. He was unhappy when his engine lost oil pressure and because he had no indication that it happened, his engine seized up.

The engine won't care if the line is crimped but the line might not be happy to be reattached after being crimped by vice grips.

The triple gauge out of any 78-85 300D will probably work. The experts can tell you which years will definitely work. See what's being offered in the parts forum. I wouldn't worry about part numbers for now. If it was a kludge before you got it, it might not be the original triple gauge anyway.

Just for purposes of edification, I've always thought it was spelled kluge or maybe kluj instead of kludge. Which is correct?

A good OP gauge or cluster should be pretty easily sourced from a junkyard or over on our parts section for cheap. Welcome to the forum!

And no need to be ashamed of the state of your car, you should see some of our rust buckets!

For that matter, you should be able to source a VDO or another manufacturer that would work at Autozone...

Thanks guys, definiately want to get that fixed this week. Im going to doctor dave's (w123 whisperer) in asheville nc to see what he has laying around. Heres another one.
Front seal on the ps pump took a dump. Noticed ps fluid climbing up the hood defiantly, going 75 on the interstate. Limped to the shop. Yada yada.. Can I pull the pulley with a standard autozone rental puller? Or is this something only the dealer might have? Bolted on a $30 kludged vickers in the meantime, but I dont like how it looked at me, and I want to put my cleaner-newer one back on.

It looks like both kludge and kluge are acceptable spellings with kluge being the original.

What was the point in even asking the original question if you've done your research other than to prove me and the OP wrong?

The is good kludge and bad kludge. If it were me then

1) I would have gotten one from a JY for next to nothing.
2) I would block the line going into the oil gauge, may be with a rubber gasket stuffed in the hole and screw the line back on. Then buy one from a JY at a convenient time when money is not tight.

One would never, ever crimp the oil line. This makes fixing the darn thing much more difficult. There is nothing wrong to maintain the MBZ with the cheapest means possible. I do it all the time, source parts from JY, Craigslist, or cheap brands, in this order. Don't get me wrong, I am a man of means but I like to improvise and recycle.

Thanks for your input. The oil cable was pretty dated, if it was nice I wouldve acted differently. I resigned myself to replacing that with the guage. This was after consulting my local junkyard. Not only do they not trust me to pull the part myself, (deal breaker) they want $75 for it. There arent too many 123s sitting in the yards around, and the ones that are here, are apparently gold plated judging from what they charged me for the spring in my combo switch, which blew up and out the window not too long ago. 75 for a junk switch. Didnt even work, and I just needed that one little spring. 75 bucks later, guy asks me if I need the rest of it. Wtf? No I said, but im taking it anyway. Just tired of these guys Trying to take advantage of a youngster. Anyways, I had no choice at the time, as this only lightly relieved my massive cab oil leak. Also coming from ignition switch, whose vacuum shutoff ceased to work a few months ago. Now I have a giant syringe hooked to my vac line to shutoff valve, so I dont have to pop the ol' hoodpiece to shut her down. laughing just thinking about it. So many kluge/kludge/klujes, so little time. At least the syringe is catching some of that oil for now.

No need to be ashamed of the state of your car. I once had a 240D wth no center console and no seats in it. I do mean no seats at all including drivers. I actualy drove it to the car was sitting on a crate of ammo. I kid you not. So a syringe in a vacume line doesn't sount all that out of whack to me.

I've used golf tees and strap clamps in the past...same effect, but didn't kill the line. Not on the MB, mind you, but on an old Ford...
