I could see problems with someone with the same name as you. You could get billed for that fellow blowing through w/o a transponder. I could see a lot more headaches in the database search.

Nobody is forcing you to get an ezpass though, you still have the option to pay cash if you desire. IMO it's a huge help and generally relieves a lot of aggravation and traffic.

I have to admit that the ability to get places quicker is nice. The turn pike has a faster speed limit than the local highways, and there's less BS while driving on them. I just don't like having to pay for them when we already pay taxes

You know what's even more convenient, efficient, and reduces traffic even more?

Get rid of all the damn tolls/toll booths altogether, and collect needed revenues via taxes elsewhere - just as is done with most other shared infrastructure. The money wasted on toll collection is insane...

The elimination of one small piece of government privacy invasion would be welcome as well.

Thanks to Ed Rendell, proceeds from the toll booths aren't just for the turn pikes anymore...it's spread out to cover other road and bridge projects across the state. In doing so, they increase the rates annually.

Side Note: In NJ, they offer a senior discounted rate on the Turnpike & GSP. It is also offered by the Del. River Port Authority bridges. (none to NY) You can only have one transponder registered for the each Senior though. So, you need to take it from car to car, which you can do in NJ without difficulty.
I switched between vehicles without a problem before I got around to adding my new car to my ez-pass account.

the problem with this idea is it makes perfect sense, therefore it doesn't stands a snowball's chance in h*** of being implemented.

In NY state they kind of do this for truck traffic. If you produce a toll reciept for the Thruway the owner does not have to pay the HUT for those miles travelled. HUT- Ny state bill trucks and vehicles above 5 tons a surcharge for "road damage" but amazingliy the roads are still rougher than a washboard.

As far as PA Turnpike. How would you like to be a cashier and make about $50K a year, with state benefits and a lovely pension after 30 years? Get a job with the PA turnpike authority thats how!! Or be a friend of ED.(There was a big hub bub about how many of his "friends" got on or apppointments to high positions in the PA Pike authority while he was in office.

Same in PA. We still have 15 years before the wife is old enough to qualify for that.

Later this year, we'll be taking advantage of my wife's 50th birthday by applying for auto insurance through AARP. I'm hoping they'll cover me as well, since I'm married to her...and 10 years younger. Gotta look for and take advantage of every discount available nowadays.

Toll roads are everywhere in Oklahoma. You can get from Tulsa to OKC on the Turner Turnpike and save 45 minutes over the same trip if you go by old Route 66.

That one Turnpike is said to pay for all of the Turnpikes in Oklahoma since almost all of the others lose money. There are only 3.5 Million people in the entire state and only a small percentage use the Toll Roads on a steady basis.

But since there is so little traffic on most of the toll roads they are a pleasure to drive. I use the Indian Nation Turnpike a lot and over a 100 mile trip I might see 50 other drivers. And that would be in the middle of the day!

And all it takes to clear up a problem is to give them a call. The last thing the Turnpike Aut. wants is for people to be anymore upset with them than they are now.

x2,

I constantly move my transponder around between 3 different vehicles, none of which were originally on the account, in fact, not even the same state as the original account holding vehicle.

Ive never had a problem where it didn't work properly, or been penalized for driving through in a RI chevy, vw, or mb, when the pass is registered to a NY nissan.

I should probably bring this up to date too, for some reason its not a problem on the NY toll roads.

Only to get to NYC

It's free on the way out.

They realize you may not have any money left when you're going....

Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel gives you zero breaks for having a transponder. Money making machine right there.

I think if I have to pay to drive on a road, I should get to speed. Apparently this logic works for more than just me. See Georgia 400 aka "Georgia Autobahn".
