Yeah that's why I shoot at a private range, we don't let weirdos in.

Public ranges are shows that's for sure!

I guess, if you were to see our storage of food, that we'd fit that group. We have survivor kits we've thrown together in ammo cans on each floor of the house. In each kit is a supply of batteries, two flashlights, a week's worth of canned and dried foods, as well as 2 days worth of MREs. The kit on the main floor has a high capacity 9mm S&W in it, the one in the basement has a .38 revolver and the one upstairs has a 1911...each with a fresh box of ammo, and each of them are padlocked. We were raised in a survivalist manner, to be prepared for anything that could happen, and to have plenty of food stored away. When hurricane Ike came and took our power out for 10 days in September of 2008, we were able to survive off of the stored and canned food and not worry about what spoiled in the 'fridge and freezer. Since then, I've really amped my efforts up on food storage...I don't ever want to be caught with my pants down, so to speak.

There's nothing wrong with being a survivalist...being a whack job is another story, though.

A friend of a friend is a hard core survivalist; ie bunker, gold, food, and enough fire power to bring down a medium sized country.

But my dad said it the best, his name is Carl, and he is just over 60 and not in the best of shape.

"Carl if the world ends your old and tired, a bunch of kids are going to kill you and take your stuff."

Lastly you get the Nazi's and beef jerky salesmen. Our local gun show for some reason is very well attended by both. If your a local Nazi and want to trade some of Hitlers boxers around it seems to be the place to be.

I go once in awhile to find some really oddball stuff, but you have to know what your looking at. Cash is preferred, I always bring at least $3k just in case.

Went to the gun show in Sacramento on the past weekend.

This time, about 3,000 people were lined up waiting to get in; I was one.

This time, things were VERY different....the crowd this time was - it looked like, extremely mainstream, and mostly all white; Not once in the 2 hours I was there - were any "weirdo types" evident..

The mood was low key and pretty serious, though...tne sentiment I heard in line was that the 2nd amendment was plainly under attack and that THIS could well be the LAST legal gun show in California.

One man told me that his son was in the US Army, and that many soldiers (according to his son) would NOT support Obama and if it came to that would take up arms against him!)

This year again, there was a booth for Utah CCW permits; but first you had to take a "training" course, now, to get one as a Californian - last year, they were giving them out for free, and in a Florida CCW booth also. This year the Florida CCW booth was gone. Maybe to them it is "Commiefornia" now....

Again, I had a good time, and spent $$$ till my cash was gone.

One other thing was very different; this time one part of the exhibition was sealed off, and here was where you could purchase ammunition. Outside
a line was formed for the hundreds of people queuing up to buy ammo...

Again, I felt very comfortable here, safe, but it sure was crowded....

Jim, somehow I missed this thread the first time around, or at least I don't remember it.

It served as a very interesting thread. I've been going to gun shows since the seventies and have observed the things that have changed and the things that have stated the same. It's interesting to read the take from someone who obviously has an interest in such things, but has never been to the show. It's also interesting to hear the differences in how they are conducted there vs. here.

Enjoyable read!

I'm glad to see you had a positive experience, Jim

We went to the local gun show in February...same situation. Less nut jobs and more common, mainstream people. Ours was a mixed bag of races...mainly white, but more black than what I saw when I lived in Ohio.

We're having another in June...I'm not going to be there early, due to the crowd, but I hope to find a few nuggets of gold. I February, I picked up a Rossi .38 that needed a small repair (made $75 on that one) and a really nice 2" Bull Hide Belt that I found for $35, which are normally double that price online. I have a number of things to take to trade or sell, including ammo for firearms I don't have.

Where is your local show? I am near York and the shows around here are not worth going to. I think I want to get rid of my Tokerov and a few boxes of ammo for it and pick up a .357 that both my wife and I can shoot. She being a leftie does like auto loaders...

The last decent show I went to was in Virignia. I got a nice shotgun there. I had to fill out the NCIS forms and wait about 10 minutes for the check to go through. I wanted to buy a pistol, but could not due to my out of state DL.

Pittsburgh Mills Mall in Tarentum PGCA --- Home Page It's about 3.5 hours from you, I think. Washington, PA has some pretty large gun shows as well.

Go to Pennsylvania Firearm Owners Association They have a ton of information about shows all over the state.

Attendance was scant, when I arrived - it was towards the very end of the last day, and I arrived a half hour before the big NFL game between Seattle and San Francisco, and they were already closing down some of the exhibits.

However, people had time in the booths to talk freely and at length.

Firearms sales are still brisk, I was told. Keeping in mind that California's laws are the most restrictive, I am not surprised. The prevailing attitude here, is, I was told "Get them while you still can."

I've also pretty much changed my own attitudes over the past couple of years, to a pretty close pro-2nd amendment stance in line with most gun owners, based in large part on the arguments and discussions heard here, from the folks here -- who I respect very highly.

I haven't yet purchased my first one, but have a steep learning curve ahead, as regards weapon selection, training, range skills, safety, education, maintenance and storage.

I feel it's ABSOLUTELY worth all the trouble to do the groundwork first..

Why?

Two of the best bumper stickers to me, for sale at the show, tell it better than I could.
